This Bird Alert was recorded on Thursday, April 27 at 10:40am.
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES seem to be moving through the Calgary birding area in
very good numbers this spring. There have been many reports of the species
here. The most recent report was Tuesday, April 25, when Sandy Ayer
observed a bird in the northernmost ravine of Strathcona Park in Calgary.
Generally, birds are slow to arrive in the area thus far this spring. Wayne
Hewitt observed a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET in his yard in Midnapore on April 26.
This is an almost 2-week gap since the first reported bird of this species
this season which was at Wyndham-Carseland Prov. Park on April 13.
Nimali Seneviratne reported 6 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were at the weir in
Calgary on the evening of April 24. This has been a regular summer location
for this species in the area for the past 3 - 4 years, so it will be
interesting to see if these 6 birds stay or move on. In the Calgary birding
area, the species has been arriving for approximately a week now.
A new location reported for HOUSE FINCHES recently is the Beltline area.
Andrew Slater reported a bird near 15 Avenue and 9 Street, SW on the days of
April 17 and 18. The species continues to expand its range in the city.
The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Monday, May 1.
