Highlights
Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS continue at Biddeford Pool.
A late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Pelreco Marsh along with a pair of GADWALL.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen near Plymouth Pond on April 22.
York County
Birds at Biddeford pool included NORTHERN GANNETS, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 50
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and 2 GRAY CATBIRDS on April 25, and 14-18 BRANT on
April 23. 2 HARELQUIN DUCKS were seen at East Point in Biddeford on April
23, along with 7 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 13 DUNLIN. 2 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS were seen at the Pool on April 21. Ten GLOSSY IBIS were seen
at Granite Point in Biddeford on April 19.
A pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were seen in Laurel Hill Cemetery on the
April 20, possibly searching for a nest hole.
A VESPER SPARROW and a pair of SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS were seen at the
Kennebunk Plains on April 24.
An early LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen in a yard in Waterboro on April 21.
Scarborough Marsh Area
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, and 2 GADWALLS were seen behind the
Pelreco on Route 9. On April 25 there were 10 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, 2 VIRGINIA
RAILS, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, and 1 EASTERN TOWHEE.
At Pine Point there was a FISH CROW on April 24.
A BLUE-HEADED VIREO was singing in a yard in Scarborough on April 25.
Four PIPING PLOVERS were seen on Ferry and Western Beaches at Prout's Neck
on April 25.
Two PIPING PLOVERS were seen at Scarborough Beach also on April 25.
Greater Portland and Western Maine
After being blown out of their original nest on Mackworth Island in Falmouth
by last week's high winds, 2 GREAT HORNED OWL chicks were placed in a
makeshift nest and are now faring well. At Maine Audubon in Falmouth there
were RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a FIELD SPARROW, a HERMIT THRUSH, and a MERLIN.
A WINTER WREN has been singing near the mulch pile in Evergreen Cemetery in
Portland much of the week, with numbers of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS,
YELLOW-RUMPED, PALM and PINE WARBLERS, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS moving
through. On April 28 in Evergreen Cemetery there was a BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER.
At Hinckley Park in South Portland on April 20, there were 20 PALM WARBLERS,
1 FISH CROW, and 4 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS. Also at Hinkley Park was
an IPSWICH SAVANNAH SPARROW feeding in the mud on the shore of the pond, and
BANK and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON.
At Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth, on April 22, there was a SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER.
At Grondin Pond in Scarborough on April 20, there were 6 LESSER SCAUP, 4
GREATER SCAUP, 14 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 AMERICAN WIGEONS, and EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS.
An EASTERN TOWHEE was seen in Buxton.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was in full song in Gray on April 28.
On Bradbury Mountain in Pownal on April 25, 302 raptors were seen, including
193 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 52 OSPREYS, 34 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 15 AMERICAN
KESTREL, 3 MERLINS, and 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS. On April 21 at Bradbury
Mountain, 12 OSPREY, 5 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 70 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 1
RED-TAILED HAWK, and 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS were seen. On April 22, 16 OSPREY,
1 BALD EAGLE, 19 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 52 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, and 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS were tallied. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO was heard
singing at Bradbury Mountain on April 26.
In Wilton there were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
At Brownfield Bog there were 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES, 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and
PINE SISKIN on April 24.
Midcoast
There was a flock of 50 PALM WARBLERS at the Brunswick Naval Air Station on
April 18.
On Monhegan Island there were ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, WINTER WREN, HERMIT
THRUSH, FIELD SPARROW, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on
April 21.
In Pittston there was an AMERICAN BITTERN on April 23.
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL is possibly nesting in a Wood Duck box in Camden.
A pair of MERLINS was very active in the Kenduskeag Ave.-Division
St.-Fountain
St. area of Bangor on April 24.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was near Annis Lane in Rockport on April 22.
In North Haven on April 23, a PALM WARBLER, GRAY CATBIRD, and PINE SISKINS
were seen.
Central Maine
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen near Plymouth Pond on April 22.
A BARN SWALLOW was seen in Dixmont, and on April 22 there were YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS and 9 EVENING GROSBEAKS.
Two BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were seen in Troy.
A WOOD THRUSH was seen at the Augusta Arboretum on April 23.
A BARRED OWL was heard in Holden on April 23.
A VEERY was vocalizing on Route 27 in Augusta on April 22.
A GRAY CATBIRD was along Eight Rod Road in Augusta.
At Sunkhaze National Wildlife Refuge, a BOREAL CHICKADEE was heard on April
21, and BROAD-WINGED HAWK, RUFFED GROUSE, and a NORTHERN HARRIER were also
seen in the refuge.
In Corinna at the St. Albans Game Preserve, an AMERICAN BITTERN and
PIED-BILLED GREBE were heard.
At the University of Maine campus in Orono, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 2 MERLINS,
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and RUBY- and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were seen.
On April 22 at the Taylor Bait Ponds in Orono there were SAVANNAH SPARROWS
and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and on April 25, an AMERICAN BITTERN was
seen at the ponds.
Eastern Maine
On Pertville Road in Sedgwick, a VESPER SPARROW was seen on April 20.
On Kingdom Road in Blue Hill, a SPRUCE GROUSE, 3 HERMIT THRUSHES, 2 PINE
WARBLERS, and 3 SWAMP SPARROWS were seen.
A SAVANNAH SPARROW was seen in Blue Hill on April 23.
On April 26 in Sieur de Mont Springs there were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a
WINTER WREN.
20 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Talmadge.
Northern Maine
A BRANT was seen in Caribou on April 23.
In Portage there were 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and SWAMP SPARROW on April 20.
Five hundred SNOW GEESE were seen at Cross Lake near Fort Kent on April 24.
Also seen in this area were RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, RUFFED GROUSE, and BROWN
CREEPER.
TREE SWALLOWS, 5 FOX SPARROWS, and YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKERS were seen in
Presque Isle.
In Grand Isle there were 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS on April 25.
In Kingfield on April 22 a GRAY CATBIRD and a BROWN THRASHER were seen.
