This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for May 1, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given for
private property, please call before going. Highlights are Yellow Grosbeak,
Glossy Ibis, Gray Hawk.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, and Clark's Nutcrackers.
The Cibola Natl. Forest, mainly mountain ranges in central N.M., has
increased fire restrictions.

In Rio Arriba County:
JW on April 23 had a DICKCISSEL in her yard in Youngsville, east of Coyote
and west of the Abiquiu Lake.

In Sandoval County:
BV on April 30 at the north end of the Corrales Bosque had a SWAINSON’S
THRUSH. A SWAMP SPARROW was along the canal 100 yards south of barrel 6.7.
LLa on April 16 saw eight EVENING GROSBEAKS in Jemez Springs.

In Santa Fe County:
JP and WW on April 14 below the Santa Fe Ski Basin near mile marker 12 had a
BLUE GROUSE. They had a PYGMY OWL just below the ski area and another
calling at the Aspen Vista on the road.

In Colfax County:
DC at Stubblefield Lake on April 26 found a PEREGRINE FALCON, a WHIMBREL, a
high count of 23 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and four RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.
He had a BARN OWL still at the roost on hwy. A1 on the Mexwell Refuge.

In Quay County:
DC at Ute Lake State Park on 27 near the Yucca Campground had a GLOSSY IBIS.
a high of 94 MARBLED GODWITS, a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and counted 70
FORSTER’S TERNS.

In Cibola County:
CJG had the first WHITE-WINGED DOVE at El Morro NM on April 16. SB had a
BLACK-THROATED SPARROW on April 21. CJG had WILLETS present on April 28.

In Bernalillo County:
RV reported three SAW-WHET OWLS were found above the Doc Long Picnic Area in
the eastern Sandia Mts. April 14. On April 29 in the evening BV had up to
four POORWILLS and a WHIP-POOR-WILL calling there. The latter was along the
creek bed north of the northernmost picnic table, near the beginning of the
Bill Spring Trail.
CB on April 30 at the Sulphur Canyon parking lot in the Sandias had a
BRIAD-WINGED HAWK. He had another broad-wing at the San Antonio de Padua Church on
NM14 near Cedar Crest.
MH had five WILLETS along the Rio Grande just north of the Alameda Bridge on
April 29.
DP had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH along the ditch north of Campbell St. near the
Rio Grande Nature Center. In the area there was also an EASTERN BLUEBIRD.
The YELLOW GROSBEAK has been at 1412 Las Lomas in Albuquerque near the UNM
campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west
onto Las Lomas, it is at backyard feeders. Many have viewed it. JO and PL saw
it on April 24. It was seen April 28 by birders from New York.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque JJ had one WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW at the pond feeder on April 23.
BMH on April 23 on the Rio Grande Bike Trail had a singing EASTERN BLUEBIRD
on the east side of the rio about ¼ mile south of Montano Street. BA saw up
to 20 WHITE PELICANS on the Rio along the bike trail between the Montano and
Paseo del Norte bridges on April 24.
DP on April 24 at the Embudo Trailhead again found a CACTUS WREN 200 yards
northwest of Indian School Rd. There was also a male SCOTT’S ORIOLE.

In Valencia County:
WW near the Madrone Ponds in Belen on April 27 had a GRAY FLYCATCHER and a
singing GRACE’S WARBLER, unusual in the lowlands in migration.
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen on April 23 JP and HS saw 12
WILLETS and the one STILT SANDPIPER. JSt on the 23rd found 15 Willets and the
sandpiper. MB and NP on April 23, on a great day at the marsh, found 16
Willets.
JO and PL on April 24 re-found the two GLOSSY IBIS in Belen on the same road
in a flooded field a quarter mile south of the railroad tracks on the east
side of the road. MH found one in the area on April 28.

In DeBaca County:
On April 30 the Sangre Cristo tour saw a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER by
the boat ramp found by JoO and LMo.
JP recorded a BROWN THRASHER at Bosque Redondo Park in Fort Sumner on April
28.

In Roosevelt County:
CR on the lek at Milnesand found the LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKENS in good numbers
this spring. CW reported 27 prairie chickens there on April 18.
At the migrant trap west of Melrose NP and MB on April 23 had the
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and a CASSIN’S VIREO. DC on April 27 saw a GRAY
FLYCATCHER,
the black-and-white, and a NASHVILLE WARBLER. JP reported the Cassin’s on
April 28. DH and the Santa Fe tour had a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO on April 30. LMo
and MR saw a CASSIN’S VIREO.
RV at Boones Draw near Portales on April 28 had a NASHVILLE WARBLER and an
OVENBIRD. JP on April 30 had a fly-over UPLAND SANDPIPER and a VERMILION
FLYCATCHER.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio BMH on April 16 saw a
ZONE-TAILED HAWK near the Chupadera Deck. CL on April 16 saw two BELL’S VIREOS.
RV,
CR, and SM on April 15 found a CASSIN’S VIREO. JP on April 22 reported a
MARBLED GODWIT and he and CB had two HORNED GREBES. JP and WW found the
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW still at the visitor center. On April 23 MB and NP saw one
grebe, one LONG-BILLED CURLEW, six WILLETS, and a female COMMON GOLDENEYE. RV
on April 28 found a HOODED WARLBER near the Flight Deck, SSA saw it again
April 30. Also present was a HUDSONIAN GODWIT. MH on April 28 had the
goldeneye,and NASHVILLE and TOWNSEND’S WARBLERS.
MH on April 28 also had a CLAY-COLLORED SPARROW on the Farm to Market Road
east of San Antonio.
JP, JO, LL, and WW had a calling PYGMY OWL a half
mile above the campground in Water Canyon, west of Socorro, on April 8. SM
reports that the campground is closed and will be moved to a new site. A
trail is to be built for birding.

In Chaves County:
GW on April 24 found an adult WHITE IBIS on Unit 6. BW and JNM on April 12
saw three AMERICAN BITTERNS from the blind at Bitter Lake Refuge. JP saw two
American Bitterns oN April 29 on the east side of the tour loop with a
calling LEAST BITTERN at Unit 15. On April 28 he had a WHIMBREL at the east end
of Unit 5 and two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS with a breeding plumage DUNLIN on
April 28 on Unit 16. RV had a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER on April 28.
JP had four MISSISSIPPI KITES on April 28 and two CHIMNEY SWIFTS over the
NMMI campus in Roswell on April 29.

In Sierra County:
In Animas Creek Canyon near Caballo Lake on April 22 DK found a GRAY HAWK
near mail box 68 in sycamores (the furthest east they occur). KS also saw it
and JB heard it call. CL had a BROAD-WINGED HAWK present on April 15.
JO, MS, and JZ reported on April 24 two VAUX’S SWIFTS (photos) at Percha Dam
State Park below the dam. JO again saw one of the swifts on April 25. CBr
on April 27 had the OSPREY, BELL’S VIREO, flycatcher, HOODED ORIOLE, and two
of the sparrows.
At the park on April 22 JP with WW reported a female NORTHERN PARULA, a BELL’
S VIREO, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, a DUSKY FLYCATCHER, and two singing CASSIN’
S VIREOS. In addition CL and JP had four WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. CL saw
an OSPREY, with a male HERMIT WARBLER a half mile south of the park on the
river. JB and DK on April 23 had three of the sparrows and DK had two BELL’S
VIREOS. JD had one sparrow on April 23.

In Grant County:
Bwi found FLAMMULATED and SPOTTED OWLS in the Pinos Altos Mts. north of
Silver City.
Ew and PT reported MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS in their yards in Gila and
Silver City.
DMZ on April 19 had a male INDIGO BUNTING in their Silver City yard with a
first year GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW on April 22.
PL and PT had a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET on Signal Peak in the Pinos Altos on
April 26.
JN on April 29 four miles south of the Hachita exit on I-10 saw 17
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS. Three miles south of Hachita he had a MERLIN, and five miles
south of the Quincy Exit there were two WILSON’S PHALAROPES and a PURPLE MARTIN.

JD saw a CATBIRD at Mangas Springs April 16.

In Hidalgo County:
CCBr at Dunagan’s Crossing on county Hwy. 1 south of Animas say they heard
from the owner that he is selling his 100 acres there.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction. He says they may be finished by the end of May.

In Dona Ana County:
DG had a female BRONZED COWBIRD at his home in northeastern Las Cruces on
April 26. He had the COMMON GROUND-DOVE laying a perhaps infertile egg on
April 27.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs on April 25 had a female
NORTHERN PARULA.
JN on April 15 saw the ACORN WOODPECKER, a PAINTED REDSTART, and five HUTTON’
S VIREOS at Aguirre State Park east of the Organ Mts..
In Mesilla Park JN on April 27 had a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER.

In Otero County:
DG on Otero Mesa on April 21-22 at a well with open water and a few Siberian
elms found several migrants including an OSPREY. He also had a CATTLE EGRET
at a salt pond by the Texas border in NM.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs JN on April 20 says he had a GRAY HAWK there in
cottonwoods. Also there was a male INDIGO BUNTING, a GRAY VIREO, and an adult
BROAD-WINGED HAWK in addition to the Gray Hawk. RC on April 22 had a BROWN
THRASHER and a CASSIN’S VIREO. DG reported the Gray Hawk adult on April 24 with
an immature Broad-winged Hawk. RC had the bunting on April 27, and JP had
the male bunting at the adjacent Washington Ranch on April 29.
RN had the first CHIMNEY SWIFT in Carlsbad on April 27.

In Lea County:
At Maddox Lake near Hobbs on April 21 RC had on April 24 a BROAD-WINGED HAWK
that flew off to the east. He found a GLOSSY IBIS there on April 26, seen
earlier on April 23, but not seen clearly.
