This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from area birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "highlights" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

In DEL NORTE county a SOLITARY SANDPIPER was in the Terwer Valley.
Thirty-one PURPLE MARTINS were roosting in a tree between Crescent City
airport and Pt. Saint George (Lucas.....).
At the Arcata Marsh were 3 PALM WARBLERS; a CHIPPING SPARROW was at the
northeast of the Log Pond. At the Mad River Fish Hatchery was a BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK and 1 RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD (Mark Morrisette).

Even though out of the area of the bird alert, an immature TRUMPETER SWAN
was seen at Meiss Lake in Siskiyou county by a post-Godwit Days field trip
(Rob Hewitt).
26 Apr.

At the dock at Fields Landing 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES were with some Black
Turnstones (Paul Springer).
27 Apr.

At Boyds Prairie at Prairie Creek State Park 20 MARBLED MURRELETS were seen
and about 40 were heard. On Hufford Road, in Orick, there were 177 WHIMBREL
in a field. A flock of 11 CATTLE EGRETS were seen flying along the bayshore
at the Arcata Marsh. On north Humboldt Bay there were 50-70 thousand
shorbirds around Sand Island. The observer also "crudely estimated" at least
10,000 LEAST SANDPIPERS, the most ever seen by the observer in Humboldt Bay
(David Fix).
A male CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR (present since 24 April Chris Frolking fide
David Fix) was seen just past the Kneeland School on Berry Road (Rob Hewitt,
found without previous knowledge of the birds presence).
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen in the wet area on Seidel Road, just north of
Lanphere Road, in the Arcata Bottoms (Amy Leist).
Near the Kneeland Airport 2 booming BLUE GROUSE were heard and a 1/4 mile
further towards the airport was a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and WESTERN KINGBIRD.
On the road to Bridgville 5 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS and 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER
were seen (Barry Saupe).
At the Arcata Community Forest, at the intersection of trail 8 & 11, was a
BARRED OWL. At Shay Park in Arcata was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER (Larry
Marrin).
28 Apr.

At the farm near the Blue Lake cottonwoods 3 CASSIN'S VIREOS, 1 BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK, 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT arrived and were heard on the 27th and
28th. WESTERN SANDPIPERS were heard along the Mad River (Paul Lohse).
29 Apr.

On Alderpoint road, 4.5 miles east of Garberville, was a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
and a PILEATED WOODPECKER (Bruce Reiley).
At the Blue Lake Cottonwoods a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was the highlight. At
the Mad River Fish Hatchery 3 WARBLING VIREOS (2 seen at the BL
cottonwoods), 1 WESTERN TANAGER, and 3 BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were found
(Scott Carey).
30 Apr.

In Kneeland the male CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR was still present past the
Kneeland School on Berry Road (Scott Carey).
