Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for May 4, 2006.
This report covers the period from April 28th to May 4th and will be
updated on
May 11th.
A WESTERN SANDPIPER, found on the 27th, was seen and photographed again on
the 28th on the mudflats at the Charlestown Breachway. This is a very rare
spring
migrant to the East coast.
On the mudflats of Succotash Marsh behind Captain Jack's restaurant, 2
CASPIAN TERN and 1 GLAUCOUS GULL was reported on the 2nd. On the 3rd, there were
4
CASPIAN TERN there along with 30 DUNLIN, 30 WILLET, 40 GREATER YELLWOLEGS, 8
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and 1 MERLIN.
At Andy's Way on Block Island, 2 WHIMBREL, 20 DUNLIN, 4 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 15 SANDERLING, 5 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 4 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 2
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and 1 MERLIN were
recorded on the 29th.
An ORCHARD ORIOLE was spotted at Ninigret Park on the 3rd.
Another ORCHARD ORIOLE was reported from Chase Farm in Lincoln on the 30th,
along with 2 BROWN THRASHER, 3 WARBLING VIREO and 4 SAVANNAH SPARROW.
Birds found at George Washington Mgmt. Area in Glocester this week included:
1 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 6 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 3 BLUE-HEADED
VIREO,
2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
On the 1st at Johnson Road in Foster, 1 INDIGO BUNTING. Also on the 1st, in
Kingston, off Route 138, 1 BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was seen. On the 2nd, a WOOD
THRUSH was heard singing at this location.
At Fisherville Brook Refuge in Exeter on the 4th, the following were seen: 1
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 6 CHIMNEY SWIFT, 1 VEERY, 5
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 4 OVENBIRD and 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. Other
sightings from Exeter included: PRIAIRE WARBLER near Veterans Cemetery,
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on Mail Road, and a HOODED
WARBLER on Trips Corner Road.
At Roger Williams Park in Providence on the 4th: 1 ORCHARD ORIOLE, 1
EASTERN KINGBIRD, 1 CEDAR WAXWING, 3 WARBLING VIREO, 30 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 3
YELLOW
WARBLER, 2 PALM WARBLER, 2 OVENBIRD, 1 GREEN HERON and 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT
HERON.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen flying over the Wild Birds Unlimited store on
Route 2 in Warwick on the 1st.
On the 4th, at Potter Woods in Kingston, 1 HOODED WARBLER was found.
The total species count for the year at the end of April is 222.
