This week several common breeders have arrived. This includes
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, EASTERN KINGBIRD, ORCHARD and BALTIMORE
ORIOLE. MYRTLE WARBLERS are also being reported in good numbers. Oddly,
I have received at least 5 different reports of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in
the last week.

A HOODED WARBLER was in Bald Hill on May 5 (AB). This spot is near
Hunter's Garden along Rt 51. To find it, travel towards Riverhead on Rt
51 and turn around at the entrance to Suffolk Community College. Look
for an area to park on the right hand side of the road where a metal
gate crosses a dirt road by a Suffolk Parklands sign.

In Quogue there were 2 CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOWS on Apr 29 (RA).

Two AMERICAN BITTERNS were near Docker's Restaurant along Dune Rd at
Shinnecock on May 3 (KF).

A well-described LAWRENCE'S WARBLER was at Davis Creek in North Sea on
Apr 30 (WBk). Perhaps if someone finds a Brewster's Warbler, we could
add Golden-winged Warbler to the year list!:)

Four CASPIAN TERNS were spotted at Mecox Bay on Apr 30 (AB) and again on
May 3 (KF). The cuts are closed at both Mecox, which still has a small
flat, and Sagaponack, which no longer has a flat. The cut at Georgica
was open earlier this week.

A single drake RING-NECKED DUCK, perhaps the last one of the season, was
on Long Pond, Sag Harbor on May 5 (HM).

Two WOOD DUCKS were at the David's Lane duck feeding area, where they
have frequented for the last 2 months on May 2 (MW). An AMERICAN KESTREL
was at the East Hampton Airport on May 2 (MW). This is an area where
they used to nest, perhaps they are making a comeback. Two PURPLE
FINCHES appeared at an East Hampton feeder on May 4 (JT).

At least 100 CHIPPING SPARROWS were at Montauk Point on May 4 (VB).
Forty GREATER YELLOWLEGS were at the Dude Ranch south of the highway in
Montauk on May 4, while 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were in the pond north of the
barn on the north side of the road (VB). At nearby Teddy Roosevelt there
was still a WILSON'S SNIPE on May 4 (VB). Three TURKEY VULTURES were
over East Lake Drive on May 4 (VB).

A LITTLE BLUE HERON was at South Ferry on Shelter Island on Apr 24
(ESl). An AMERICAN PIPIT was at Hay Beach on Shelter Island on April 25
(ESl). A PEREGRINE FALCON and a COOPER'S HAWK were at Mashomack on Apr
30 (WBk), as was a BROAD-WINGED HAWK (K&BRu).

At the former Grumman facility in Calverton there were still WILD
TURKEYS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, EASTERN MEADOWLARKS and at least 2 AMERICAN
KESTRELS on Apr 26 (AM)

Two NORTHERN SHOVELERS, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS
were in Aquebogue on Apr 28 (BA).

A HOODED WARBLER was in Cutchogue on May 4 (PG). An AMERICAN KESTREL was
at the Southold Dump on May 4 (PG).

A WILSON'S SNIPE was along Narrow River Rd on May 2 (MW).

A TURKEY VULTURE was at Hunter's Garden in Eastport on May 1 (BA).

THE EAST END YEAR LIST

The year list has burgeoned to 222 species. Birds not yet recorded, but
which should be seen in the next week include Tricolored and
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Spotted and White-rumped Sandpiper,
Short-billed Dowitcher, Forster's & Roseate Tern, Black Skimmer, Least
Flycatcher, Cliff Swallow, Veery, Chestnut-sided, Bay-breasted,
Blackpoll, Worm-eating, Wilson's & Canada Warbler, Northern Waterthrush,
Grasshopper Sparrow, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Blue Grosbeak and Bobolink.

CORRIGENDA

Last week when I reported the first CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW in Quogue I
inadvertently omitted the observer's name, which is Ryan Anderson.

MOTH REPORTS SOUGHT

If anyone encounters any interesting looking moths on Long Island,
especially larger species, I would be interesting in viewing photographs
of them as long as date and location are known. I can also identify most
macro moths from photographs and would be happy to do so for the
curious.

This week I received reports from Bob Adamo (BA), Ryan Anderson (RA),
Linda Badkin, Andy Baldelli, Willy Becker (WBk), Leslie Beebe, Robert
Bobrow, Vicki Bustamante, Jim Clinton, Tom Damiani, Ken Fuestel, Chris
Gangemi, Paul Gillen, Sandy Hunter, Philip Lo Cicero, Hugh McGuinness,
Andy Murphy, Bruce Nussbaum, Carlee Okegee, Pat Paladines, Barbara &
Karen Rubinstein (B&KRu), Bob Savage, Julian Shapiro, Eric Slayton,
Norma Sloane, John Todaro, Mike Wasilco, Richard Willott
