Highlights

Birds returning in good numbers throughout much of the state were
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS.


RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were widely reported on May 4 and 5 and
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were reported from many areas.


Other birds moving into the state were NASHVILLE WARBLER, BLACK AND WHITE
WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, OVENBIRD, PRAIRIE WARBLER, WOOD THRUSH, and
RED-EYED VIREOS.

A SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen near Plymouth Pond.

York County

BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, RED-EYED VIROES returned to the Berwick area
this week along with ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, YELLOW WARBLER, and HOUSE WREN
on May 4, and WOOD THRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and
OVENBIRDS on May 5.

A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen in Cape Neddick on April 30 and BARN SWALLOWS
returned on April 27.

A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen in Wells.

Three PIPING PLOVERS were at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunk. A
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO were at the Kennebunk
Plains on May 4.

A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD arrived in Arundel on May 5.

A COMMON RAVEN is nesting near the Cascade Road in Saco, and a WINTER WREN
was singing continuously in the same area.

Scarborough Marsh Area

Eight WILLETS were at Dunstan Landing in Scarborough.

A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen on Spurwink Road on May 5.

On Eastern Road this week there were GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILLETS,
PECTORAL and LEAST SANDPIPERS, WILSON'S SNIPE, SNOWY and GREAT EGRETS,
GLOSSY IBIS, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and AMERICAN PIPITS.

At Higgins Beach 3 pair of LAUGHING GULLS were seen on May 4.

At Pine Point there was a LITTLE BLUE HERON. By the Jetty at Pine Point
there were 14 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.

A WHIP-POOR-WILL was calling at Fuller Farm in Scarborough on April 30.
Other birds at Fuller Farm this week were NASHVILLE, and BLACK AND WHITE
WARBLER, EASTERN TOWHEE, and BLUE-HEADED VIREOS.

Greater Portland and Western Maine

Three GLOSSY IBIS were seen over the Cape Elizabeth tennis courts, two
CAROLINA WRENS were seen on Zebb's Cove Road. Three RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS
and 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO were also seen in Cape Elizabeth.

At Hinckley Park in South Portland there were BANK and NORTHERN
ROUGHED-WINGED SWALLOWS.

At Evergreen Cemetery in Portland this week there were PALM, PINE, PRAIRIE,
YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK AND WHITE, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, and BLACK-THROATED
GREEN WARBLERS, NORTHERN PARULA, OVENBIRD, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WINTER WREN,
FIELD SPARROW, and SWAINSON'S THRUSH.

At Twin Brook recreation fields on Greeley Road in Cumberland there were
many gulls in the fields, including an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. Two
CAROLINA WRENS were in different spots in Cumberland on May 1.

The hawk-watch totals at Bradbury Mountain in Pownal were 6 TURKEY VULTURES,
192 OSPREYS, 4 BALD EAGLES, 13 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 172 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 6
COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 617 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 10 RED-TAILED
HAWKS, 125AMERICAN KESTRELS, and 10 MERLINS.

A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen in Windham on May 5.

In Gray there were BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS and an AMERICAN BITTERN

PINE SISKINS are still being seen in Bridgton.

In Wilton there were BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 10 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 1 BROWN
THRASHER, 2 SHARP-SHINNED and 2 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, and
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were seen in Sandy River Plantation, 7 miles south of
Rangeley.

A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was in West Bethel on May 5.

Midcoast

A NORTHERN PARULA was seen in Warren on April 30.

In Newcastle, a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen on April 28.

In Camden, on Lily Pond Drive there were BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD, and BLACK-THROATED-GREEN WARBLER on May 1.

Central Maine

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at a feeder in Topsham on May 3.

In Richmond there were 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS on April 27 and 50 WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS on April 22.

A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen in Bog Brook, Minot on April 29.

Birds moving through the Hallowell area included 3 BROWN THRASHERS, 3-4
FIELD SPARROWS, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, a BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER, a
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 1 AMERICAN PIPIT, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and 3
BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, among others.

An AMERICAN BITTERN was at Messalonskee Lake in Belgrade. Elsewhere in
Belgrade there were BLUE-HEADED VIREOS and EVENING GROSBEAKS on April 28,
and 1 PINE SISKIN on May 1.

A NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW was seen in Oakland.

At Plymouth Pond there were 1 CLIFF SWALLOW, and 1 SANDHILL CRANE on April
27.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was seen in Dixmont on April 28.

There were 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Troy on April 27.

On Taylor Road in Orono there were 3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 1 PINE WARBLER,
1 BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER, and 1 male RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLER, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH were
seen on Pushaw Lake in Hudson.

Eastern Maine

A CAROLINA WREN was seen in Hulls Cove, on Mount Desert Island on April 29.

On May 1 in Blue Hill there was a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.

At Stinson's Seafood in Prospect Harbor there was GLAUCOUS GULL on April 29.

In Columbia-Scanner there were FIELD SPARROW, 8 VESPER SPARROWS, 1 BARN
SWALLOW, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and 1 MERLIN.

On April 30 in East Machias on Gardner Lake Road there were 2 GRAY JAYS and
1 EVENING GROSBEAK.

In Roque Bluffs on Johnson Cove Road there was a lingering COMMON GOLDENEYE.

In a yard in Machiasport there were 1 MERLIN and 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER.

At the Machias Causeway there was 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER.

Northern Maine

In Indian Township there were 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN, NASHVILLE,
YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK AND WHITE, PALMS, PINE WARBLERS, 1 BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER, plus BLUE-HEADED and an early RED-EYED VIREO.

Northwest of Rockwood in Tomhegan Township there was a displaying male
SPRUCE GROUSE on a logging road along with 2 BLACK- BACKED WOODPECKRS and a
MAGNOLIA WARBLER.

Two NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were calling in Allagash on May 2.

A PURPLE FINCH, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and 4 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were seen
in Fort Kent.

In Houlton were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, PINE SISKIN, and CHIPPING SPARROWS.
