This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for May , 2006, sponsored
by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given for

eastern strays.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, and Clark's Nutcrackers.
The Cibola Natl. Forest, mainly mountain ranges in central N.M., has
increased fire restrictions.

In Sandoval County:
MW on May 1 had a BLACK HAWK at Cochiti Lake below the NM22 bridge.
WW on May 2 at Cochiti at the Tetilla Peak and main sides had 70 WILLETS,
nine MARBLED GODWITS, nine WHITE-FACED IBIS, 27 AVOCETS, about 20 FORSTER’S
TERNS, and a CASPIAN TERN with other shorebirds.
BV on April 30 at the north end of the Corrales Bosque had a SWAMP SPARROW
along the canal 100 yards south of barrel 6.7.
In Santa Fe County:
JK on May 4 reported a SCOTT’S ORIOLE near Lamy.
JP and WW on April 14 below the Santa Fe Ski Basin near mile marker 12 had a
BLUE GROUSE. They had a PYGMY OWL just below the ski area and another
calling at the Aspen Vista on the road.
In Colfax County:
DC at Stubblefield Lake on April 26 found a PEREGRINE FALCON. On May 1 he
counted 437 WILSON’S PHALAROPES and four SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.
In Union County:
BH on May 1 at Clayton Lake State Park had a COMMON LOON, OSPREY, two
EASTERN PHOEBES, 75 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (mostly MYRTLES), and 85 WHITE-FACED
IBIS.
In Quay County:
DC at Ute Lake State Park on April 27 near the Yucca Campground had a
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and counted 70 FORSTER’S TERNS. At the headquarters area
on May 4 he found two NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES and two male ORCHARD ORIOLES with
two LEAST TERNS and 52 MARBLED GODWITS.
In Bernalillo County:
RV reported three SAW-WHET OWLS were found above the Doc Long Picnic Area in
the eastern Sandia Mts. April 14. On April 29 in the evening BV had up to
four POORWILLS and a WHIP-POOR-WILL calling there. The latter was along the
creek bed north of the northernmost picnic table, near the beginning of the
Bill Spring Trail.
DP had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH along the ditch north of Campbell St. near the
Rio Grande Nature Center on April 28. In the area there was also an EASTERN
BLUEBIRD.
The YELLOW GROSBEAK has been at 1412 Las Lomas in Albuquerque near the UNM
campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west
onto Las Lomas, it is at backyard feeders. BP and others did not find it on
May 4.
JJ reported a PALM WARBLER along the east side of the Rio Grande between
Montano and Paseo del Norte on April 30.
DE had an adult HARRIS’S SPARROW on May 2 at their feeder in the South
Valley of Albuquerque..
BMH on April 23 on the Rio Grande Bike Trail had a singing EASTERN BLUEBIRD
on the east side of the rio about a quarter mile south of Montano Street.
DP on April 24 at the Embudo Trailhead again found a CACTUS WREN 200 yards
northwest of Indian School Rd. There was also a male SCOTT’S ORIOLE.
In DeBaca County:
CBl, JBl, BW, and BF on May 2 saw two COMMON LOONS on Sumner Lake.
On April 30 the Sangre Cristo tour saw a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER by
the boat ramp found by BP.
JP recorded a BROWN THRASHER at Bosque Redondo Park in Fort Sumner on April
28. JNM on April 30 reported 13 WILLETS and ten WHITE-FACED IBIS.
In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap west of Melrose JBl, CBl, BW and BF on May 2 found a
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and INDIGO BUNTING. CL and CCBr on
May 3 saw two BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS and the grosbeak and DC found these
and a NORTHERN PARULA, a MOURNING WARBLER, a singing WHITE-EYED VIREO, a BLUE
JAY, and a CATBIRD. . On May 4 CL and CCBR saw one Black-and-White, an
AMERICAN REDSTART, and a female EASTERN TOWHEE.
RV at Boones Draw near Portales on April 28 had an OVENBIRD. JP on April 30
had a VERMILION FLYCATCHER
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio RV on April 28 found a HOODED
WARLBER near the Flight Deck, SSA saw it again April 30. Also present was a
HUDSONIAN GODWIT. RD on May 2 had the godwit, and many shorebirds incluidng
Willets and Marbled Godwits. JB also saw the godwit on May 2. RC on April 30
had a SCOTT’S ORIOLE in the cactus garden and a CATBIRD on the Rio Brave
Trail along the Rio Grande.
JP, JO, and WW had a calling PYGMY OWL a half mile above the campground in
Water Canyon, west of Socorro on April 8. SM reports that the campground is
closed and will be moved to a new site. A trail is to be built for birding.
In Catron County:
JH had a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at her ranch east of Datil on May 6.
She had a RED CROSSBILL on May 4.
In Chaves County:
On Bitter Lake Refuge GW on April 24 found an adult WHITE IBIS on Unit 6.
He found it still there on Unit 16 on May 3. BW and JNM on April 12 saw three
AMERICAN BITTERNS from the blind. JP saw two American Bitterns oN April 29
on the east side of the tour loop with a calling LEAST BITTERN at Unit 15.
On April 28 he had two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. RV had a BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER on April 28. GW found a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on Unit 3 and heard the Least
Bittern on Units 15 or 16 on May 3.
JP had four MISSISSIPPI KITES on April 28 and two CHIMNEY SWIFTS over the
NMMI campus in Roswell on April 29.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park CBr on April 27 had BELL’S VIREO, DUSKY FLYCATCHER,
and HOODED ORIOLE with a GRAY FLYCATCHER on April 30. PY reported that KSt
on May 29 and NS on April 30 found the OSPREY amd a SPOTTED SAMDPIPER.
In Grant County:
BWi found FLAMMULATED and SPOTTED OWLS in the Pinos Altos Mts. north of
Silver City.
PT reported MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS in HER yard in Silver City.
PL and PT had a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET on Signal Peak in the Pinos Altos
Mts. on April 26.
In Hidalgo County:
SK on May 2 reported briefly seeing a hawking SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER
south of Rodeo on US 80 between mile posts 409 and 410.
CCBr at Dunagan’s Crossing on county Hwy. 1 south of Animas say they heard
from the owner that he is selling his 100 acres there.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds in Deming will be closed for up to
a year for construction. He says they may be finished by the end of May.
In Dona Ana County:
DG had a female BRONZED COWBIRD at his home in northeastern Las Cruces on
April 26.
JN on April 15 saw the ACORN WOODPECKER, a PAINTED REDSTART, and five HUTTON’
S VIREOS at Aguirre State Park east of the Organ Mts.
In Mesilla Park JN on April 27 had a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER.
In Otero County:
DG on Otero Mesa on April 21-22 at a well with open water and a few Siberian
elms found an OSPREY. On April 29 he had at the Alamos Mt./Alamo Springs
Stage Stop a GRAY and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER, POORWILL, CASSIN’S VIREO, two
BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHERS, and surprisingly in this lowland site three female CASSIN
’S FINCHES.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.
CL and CCBr on May 3 had a CALIFORNIA GULL and a SNOW GOOSE at the lakes.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs JN on April 20 says he had a GRAY HAWK in
cottonwoods. Also there was a male INDIGO BUNTING, and an adult BROAD-WINGED HAWK in
addition to the Gray Hawk. DG reported seeing the Gray Hawk adult on April 24
with an immature Broad-winged Hawk. RC had the bunting on April 27, and JP
had the male bunting at the adjacent Washington Ranch on April 29. RiW on
April 29 saw both species of hawks at the Springs. BF, CBl, JBl, and BW on May
1 had a NORTHERN PARULA and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. JB on May 1 saw the
black-and-white, with a male and a female PARULA, and the Broad-winged Hawk.
RiW had a MISSISSIPPI KITE from May 2 to 4 at his home in north Carlsbad.
In Lea County:
PM on May 1 had a male and female AMERICAN REDSTART at their home near
Eunice.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. May 11-12 is the Birdathon for funds for Audubon led by Karen
Boettcher. May 18 is to White Lakes and Stanley with Rebecca Gracey. On May 25 they
go to Bandelier NM near Los Alamos led by Marge Williams.
The Colfax County group will explore 0n May 10 the Angel Fire/Eagle Nest
area, including FR 76, Eagle Nest Lake, and parts of Cimarron Canyon. Leader is
Dave Cleary at 375-2971.
Saturday, May 13 will be the annual county counts. Contact your county

At Quarai Ruins on May 13 Hart Schwarz will lead the IMBD event with a
morning bird walk from 8:30 to 11 and some talks later. Contact him at 346-3870

On Saturday, May 20, Hart Schwarz will lead a trip for the Sevilleta Refuge
