EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -

This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, May 5.


Following several days of wet weather and wind out of the northeast, the winds
turned south late yesterday, and the first major wave of migrants, including
many wood warblers, arrived this morning.


Among a minimum of 20 species of wood warblers at Mount Auburn Cemetery
in Cambridge were 3 CAPE MAYS, 1 BLACKBURNIAN, 12 BLACK-AND-
WHITES, 2 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 8 OVENBIRDS, 3 COMMON
YELLOW-THROATS, 1 HOODED, and 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, and also
at Mount Auburn were 2 GREEN HERONS, 2 GREAT CRESTED FLY-
CATCHERS, 1 WOOD THRUSH, 2 SCARLET TANAGERS, 1 WHITE-
CROWNED SPARROW, 1 DARK-EYED JUNCO, 3 ORCHARD ORIOLES,
and 16 BALTIMORE ORIOLES.

Among hundreds of migrants observed arriving at or passing by the
eastern shore
of Cape Ann this morning, highlights included 6 MERLINS, 30 CHIMNEY
SWIFTS, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 10 RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, 2 AMERICAN PIPITS, 15 species of wood warblers including
1 TENNESSEE, 16 NORTHERN PARULAS, 60 YELLOW-RUMPEDS, and
30 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS,
1 INDIGO BUNTING, and 3 PINE SISKINS, and at the Marblehead Neck
sanctuary there were 5 WOOD THRUSHES, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and
at least 16 species of wood warblers including 20 NORTHERN PARULAS, 2
CHESTNUT-SIDEDS, 25 BLACK-THROATED GREENS, roughly 50
YELLOW-RUMPEDS, 2 MAGNOLIAS, 4 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS,
roughly 100 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 1 BLACKBURNIAN,
10 BLACK-THROATED BLUES, 1 AMERICAN REDSTART, 20
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH,
and 15 OVENBIRDS.

Reports from Plum Island this morning included 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS,
2 SORAS, 20 AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 1 SNOWY OWL, 1 WHIP-POOR-
WILL, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 4 EASTERN KINGBIRDS, 15 species of
wood warblers including 20 BLACK-THROATED GREENS, and 22 BLACK-
AND-WHITES, 3 SEASIDE SPARROWS, 2 WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS, 3 BOBOLINKS, 250 migrating BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS, and 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES.

In the Beech Forest section of Provincetown this morning there were 25
BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 10 NORTHERN PARULAS, 80 YELLOW-
RUMPED WARBLERS, 10 BLACK-THROATED GREENS, 10 BLACK-
AND-WHITES, and 12 PURPLE FINCHES, and two-day totals of migrant
raptors noted yesterday and today at the Pilgrim Heights hawkwatch in
Truro included 23 OSPREYS, 69 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 28 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 34 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 22 MERLINS, and 3 PEREGRINE
FALCONS, and also seen there were roughly 70 migrating RED-
BREASTED NUTHATCHES.

Seen recently in the vicinity of South Beach in Chatham were 375 BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS, 6 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 115 WILLETS, 12
RED KNOTS, 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS,
2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and 1600 DUNLIN, and miscellaneous
reports included an AMERICAN BITTERN and an UPLAND SANDPIPER
at North Monomoy Island in Chatham, 3 BLACK SKIMMERS elsewhere
in Chatham, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN and 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON at
Nantucket, an INDIGO BUNTING at Nahanton Park in Newton, a
LINCOLN'S SPARROW at the Drumlin Farm sanctuary in Lincoln,
and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on the Boston Common.
