Saturday, May 6, 2006. 8:45 pm update. Compiled and transcribed by David

GREAT EGRET
BANK SWALLOW

Saturday, May 6
RARE BIRD ALERT: A GREAT EGRET was observed this evening on the north side
of Cowichan Bay just south of Duncan; it is best seen by scope via the
Cowichan Bay Dock Road or from behind the nearby mill.
A BANK SWALLOW was among other swallow species at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary
in Saanich.
The first WILLOW FLYCATCHER of spring was reported at the Pike Lake hydro
sub-station off Munns Road in Saanich.

Friday, May 5
A GREEN HERON is frequenting Somenos Creek, some 200 meters upstream from
Lakes Road in Duncan.
A "GOLDEN-PLOVER" of undetermined species was near the south dyke of
Cowichan Bay.

Thursday, May 4
2 ROCK SANDPIPERS were seen on Trial Island, and then later at Harling Point
at the Chinese Cemetery. This is accessed from the foot of Crescent Road
which is off King George Terrace along the Victoria waterfront. Please show
respect when visiting this national historic site.
On the rocks just off the Victoria Golf Course in Oak Bay there were 4
MARBLED GODWITS and 20 WHIMBREL.

Wednesday, May 3
2 to 4 GRAY JAYS were seen by different observers on Mount Prevost near
Duncan.
A male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at the Rocky Point Bird Observatory in
Metchosin. Note access is restricted here as it is on military property.
A female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD remained at the Victoria Golf Course.
A second-year SWAINSON'S HAWK was on Mount Douglas in Saanich. Also there
was an impressive tally of 6 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES near the summit. This has
been a remarkable spring on Vancouver Island for both Townsend's Solitaire
and Mountain Bluebird.

Tuesday, May 2
In the morning, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES were at Clover Point along the Victoria
waterfront.
A female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was near the 5th tee of the Victoria Golf Course.
Nearby was a RED KNOT, which then flew towards McMicking Point.
CASPIAN TERNS continue at Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood with 3 birds, also
present were 100 BONAPARTE'S GULL and 12 BRANT.

Sunday, April 30
The first OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER of the season was reported at Mt Tolmie in
Saanich.
At 4655 Kerryview Drive in the Prospect Lake area was the first BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK of spring; birders are welcome to visit the property.
On Stewart Mountain Road off Millstream Road in the Highlands there were 8
BAND-TAILED PIGEONS.
2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 3 CASPIAN TERNS were observed at Esquimalt
Lagoon.
