You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Sunday May 7. The roster this week includes sightings of
WILSON’S PLOVER, WHITE FACED IBIS, WESTERN GREBE, BLACK-HEADED GULL,
GULL-BILLED TERN, KING RAIL, and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.

There has been a great flight of passerines the last few days.
Friday 5/5 was the best with no less than 20 species of warbler being
reported. Among the migrants observed were singing male CERULEAN
WARBLER and CAPE MAY WARBLER.

There has been no positive report of the WILSON’S PLOVER since 5/1.
Many have reported looking for the bird to no avail. If the bird
happens to be re-found it will be posted to the Jersey Birding
Listserv and the New Jersey RBA.

The WHITE-FACED IBIS found on 5/1 at Beaver Dam near Goshen has
continued to be seen throughout the week. The last reported sighting
of this bird was 5/6.

A WESTERN GREBE was seen from Reed’s Beach on 5/6. The bird was seen
with a group of scoter not far from the jetty. Later the same day
around 4:00 p.m. the grebe was seen from Cook’s Beach which is just
to the south of Reed’s Beach

This morning a first winter BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen flying in a
northerly direction along the beach from the St. Peter’s jetty.

GULL-BILLED TERN has been seen from various locations in the last
week. On 5/1 two were seen from Norbury’s Landing. Also on 5/1 four
were seen at their usual haunt at Beaver Dam near Goshen and again on
5/4.

KING RAIL along with CLAPPER RAIL was reported in the Dividing Creek
area on 5/3.

Numbers of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS have been seen around Cape May this
week. One was seen on 5/3 from Cape May Point. Again, this species
was seen flying over the Meadows on 5/4. On 5/5 one was seen from a
backyard on Sunset Blvd. and on 5/6 in the wet wood at Higbee’s Beach.
