This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored

Travel Center on Orange Street at the Orange Street exit off
Interstate 90 recorded Sunday evening May 7th, 2006.

Sam Koenen was at Benton Lake NWR on Saturday May 6th and
found a male LONG-TAILED DUCK just past the Franklin Gull
Colony.
A Five Valleys Audubon field trip to Brown's Lake led by Jim Brown
found a GREAT EGRET near Brown's Lake on Saturday May 6th.
Helen Carlson and Monty Sullins were at Sword Park in Billings
early Friday May 5th and found a SPRAGUE'S PIPIT.
May 4th Barb Jacquith reported a cold morning in Red Lodge at
her feeders with good numbers of BLACK ROSY-FINCHES and
CASSIN'S FINCHES feeding. Barb also reported her first
BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD of the year on May 1st.
May 3rd Wayne Tree reported finding a SHORT-BILLED DOWIT-
CHER and a DUNLIN at Lee Metcalf NWR near Stevensville.
Brett Walker found a singing male GRASSHOPPER SPARROW
on Mt. Sentinel above the UofM in Missoula May 3rd - they are
not regular in the valley.
May 3rd, Bob Petty and others did a shorebird survey in the
Bitterroot Valley near Corvallis and found a non-breeding plumaged
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and some LEAST SANDPIPERS.
Bob Martinka was at the Missouri River Delta where it flows into
Canyon Ferry Lake near Townsend May 3rd and had a flock
of 300 to 400 MARBLED GODWITS.
Dan Casey reported 2 CASPIAN TERNS on the north shore of
Flathead Lake May 3rd - they are not annual there.
April 28th Patrice Favreau found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD
in Cherry Gulch up the Rattlesnake. There has been no
further word on this bird.
John Carlson reported on a migrating flock of FRANKLIN'S
GULLS he observed April 26th. He reported there were
well over 1000 in groups of 50 to 60 heading northwest
near Glasgow.
BIRD FESTIVALS
The Montana Audubon Bird Festival will be in Glasgow
June 2-3-4 providing excellent prairie birding. Contact
the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce or Montana Audubon.
The Bitterroot Birding and Nature Festival will be centered
at Lee Metcalf NWR near Stevensville June 10-11 in a
variety of birding habitats.
Field Trips:
May 12th-14th: Joe Elliot leads a weekend field trip to the
Rocky Mountain Front. Call Joe at 542-5014.
Sunday May 14th: Half-day field trip to the Smurfit-Stone
plant west of Missoula. Meet at the UofM Fieldhouse
parking lot at 800am or at the pulp mill at 830am.
Saturday May 20th: I will lead a new field trip through
Crystal Creek to Turah - meet at the UofM field house
in the middle of the parking lot at 800am.
