This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, August 29.
The WILSON'S PLOVER at South Beach in Chatham was still present over
the weekend as were 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 25 HUDSONIAN
GODWITS, 3 MARBLED GODWITS, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL,
3 FORSTER'S TERNS, 4 BLACK TERNS, and 1 BLACK SKIMMER, and at
South Monomoy Island in Chatham there were 12 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 12
RUDDY DUCKS, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 8 GLOSSY IBISES, 1 COMMON
MOORHEN, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS,
90 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 8 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 8 STILT SANDPIPERS, 7 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 2
WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 2
FORSTER'S TERNS, 100 BLACK TERNS, and 1 YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER.
The CACKLING GOOSE in Concord was seen again over the weekend at the
Great Meadows Refuge off Monsen Road and in the cow pasture on the north
side of the intersection of Barrett's Mill Road and Route 2. Other birds
seen over
the weekend at the Great Meadows Refuge included 3 GREAT EGRETS, a
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, an
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 40 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, and a SEDGE WREN.
On a boat trip on Saturday from Cape Cod to the Continental Shelf edge roughly
80-100 miles south of Nantucket birds seen included 5 CORY'S SHEARWATERS,
35 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 3 AUDUBON'S
SHEARWATERS, roughly 3000 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 9 LEACH'S
STORM-PETRELS, 200 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 15 RED PHALAROPES,
3 LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, and a TREE SWALLOW at the shelf edge.
Weekend reports from Plum Island included 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1
MERLIN, 2 SORAS, 4 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, and BLACK-
BURNIAN, CHESTNUT-SIDED, and MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, and birds
noted in Essex Bay yesterday included 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON, 340
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 8 RED KNOTS, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 1
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 1 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, and 150
COMMON TERNS.
A report from the Belle Isle Marsh in East Boston included 23 GREAT
EGRETS, 91 SNOWY EGRETS, 1 VIRGINIA RAIL, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER,
and 2 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, at Bolton Flats there were
16 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, roughly 6600
AMERICAN ROBINS coming into an evening roost, 6 INDIGO BUNTINGS,
and 1260 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and miscellaneous reports included 25
RED KNOTS and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at Duxbury Beach, 3 WILD
TURKEYS at the Mass Audubon Boston Nature Center in Mattapan, and a
DARK-EYED JUNCO in Post Office Square in Boston.
