Sightings for May 9

On Okanagan Lake directly out from the mouth of Mission Creek in Kelowna, a
CLARK'S GREBE swam fairly close to shore with a few WESTERN GREBES on May 8
(CC,JR). Also seen here were 8 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS (CC,JR).

An imm. DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was swimming along the E. shore at the S.
end of Duck Lake in Kelowna (CC,JR).

Soaring over the cliffs on Bear Lake FSR off Westside Road near Kelowna was
an imm. PEREGRINE FALCON (CC,JR).

A WILD TURKEY was seen 5 km from Hwy 33 on the Big White Road, E. of Kelowna
on May 8 (BB).

A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was seen at Okanagan Lake Provincial Park (MF) and the
first MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER was noted singing along a ravine at Industrial
and Main St. in Penticton (LN).


Sightings for May 7

Strong winds and powerful rainstorms made for exciting birding throughout
the valley today. Maude Roxby Bird Sanctuary in Kelowna was very productive.
Highlights included an AMERICAN BITTERN perched in the marsh near the
observation deck on the boardwalk (LR), a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW (CC,RT)
feeding along the fence at the parking area and a pair of MEW GULLS (one
adult and one second year) resting on the bay (CC,RT,GW). In the early
morning a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was observed feeding along the shores of
Mud Bay (DCo).

At Robert Lake there was a DUNLIN molting into alternate plumage. It was in
the presence of two WESTERN SANDPIPERS (CC,RT).

Two DUNLIN were also seen at the small pond on Hwy 97 just W. of O'keefe's
Pond near Vernon (DC).

A SANDERLING was spotted on the sand bar at the mouth of Mission Ck in
Kelowna on May 5 (RT) and was seen again on May 7 (CC,RT,LR,AH).

At Trevor Forder's feeder on Black Road in the Ellison area of Kelowna there
was a female PURPLE FINCH (TF). For updates on the bird call Trevor at
765-4082.

Sutherland Hills Park in Kelowna was alive with migrants including a singing
male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER and a HERMIT THRUSH (CC,RT).

Along the railroad tracks beside Mill Creek at Scandia Golf and Games in N.
Kelowna there were a few notable birds seen this morning including a singing
male COMMON REDPOLL, a male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE and a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE
(CC,RT,TF).

BULLOCK'S ORIOLES and WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES were also reported from the
Summerland Research Station where there was also a pair of NORTHERN
GOSHAWKS, GRAY FLYCATCHERS and a LAZULI BUNTING (LRo).

A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was found on the island at the S. end of Vaseux
Lake (RC).

On May 6, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS were at ALki Lake in Kelowna and an EARED GREBE
was at Robert lake (MB,m.ob).

A lone TUNDRA SWAN was at Duck Lake in N. Kelowna on May 5 (JM).

A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE appeared at 1640 Gillard Drive in Kelowna, near
Redlich Pond on May 5 (JA).

Two SNOW GEESE, an adult and an imm., are now present at Thomson Brook Pond
and continue as of May 5 (RT). An adult and imm. SNOW GOOSE also continue at
the N. end of Otter Lake N. of Vernon as of May 7 (DC).

On Thursday, May 4, 18 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen on Okanagan Lake
off Sunoka Park in Summerland (LRo,LN). Other recent sightings from
Summerland include a PRAIRIE FALCON on May 4 at Sunoka Park (LRo).

Seven AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were also seen far out on Okanagan Lake from
Westside Road near Vernon on May 7, while an AMERICAN BITTERN was heard from
the marshes off Westside Road as well (DC).


Sightings for May 1

Many spring arrivals have appeared throughout the Okanagan Valley during the
past week. Basically any good migrant traps seem to have birds presently,
for example one observer birded Okanagan Lake Provincial Park between
Summerland and Peachland on May 1, finding 56 species. Included were
WARBLING VIREO, HERMIT THRUSH, WILSON'S WARBLER and a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW
(MF).

At Robert lake on May 1 there were 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER,
a few SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 6 LESSER YELLOWLEGS (CC).

Visits on April 28 and 29 to the campground at Bear Creek Provincial Park
produced some nice migrants as well such as DUSKY FLYCATCHER, HAMMOND'S
FLYCATCHER, NASHVILLE WARBLERS and WESTERN TANAGER (CC,RT,MF).

On April 26 a EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was seen in Kelowna near the
intersection of Berard Road and Spears Road (MB).

A BARRED OWL was in trees in Trevor Forder's backyard in the Ellison area of
Kelowna on April 26 (TF).
