The Calgary Bird Alert has received a late report of a SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER in southwest Calgary. The bird was seen by Peter Bush on Sunday,
August 21 "along the Sarcee Trail extension" at the west end of 90 Ave SW in
south Glenmore in Calgary. Peter said he had a "very good look" at the bird
at very close range. This species has been reported as an annual vagrant
somewhere in the province in recent years.

The first GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE of this year's fall migration have
been reported. Andrew Slater observed 3 birds feeding in a flock of 200
CANADA GEESE on Sunday, Aug 28 in a field in the southwest corner of the
Hwys 817-564 junction north of Strathmore. The same day Andrew observed 6
BLACK-NECKED STILTS at the slough just east of Shepard; the species was
scarce in our area this summer. Terry Korolyk observed the probable fall
season's first migrant COMMON LOONS on Saturday, Aug. 27 when he saw 3 birds
on the water off the dam at Glenmore Reservoir.

Another NASHVILLE WARBLER has been observed in the Calgary area. Rob Worona
and a CFNS group saw a lone bird on a field trip to North Glenmore Park on
Sunday, August 28. Participants in the outing also saw as many as 3
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, several TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, and a PALM WARBLER. At
Diamond Cove, which is on the west side of the Bow River just north of
Mallard Point in east Fish Creek PP, on the morning of Aug 25, Andrew Slater
and Bill Walker watched a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER,
and an adult SHARP-SHINNED HAWK amongst a good number and variety of other
birds. Tony Timmons and Dave Gibson both observed a PHILADELPHIA VIREO at
the south end of the pedestrian bridge over the Elbow River in Glenmore
Weaselhead at 10am on Sat. August 27.

Shore and wading birds are still being seen in large concentrations at
various area sloughs and water bodies. Reports on Aug. 28 included flocks
of 270 STILT SANDPIPERS and 420 LESSER YELLOWLEGS seen by Andrew Slater just
east of Shepard, and observed by Terry Korolyk at Clear Lake 15 kms east of
Stavely were as many as 2500 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 500 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
and 240 GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Dwight Knapik observed a lone SANDHILL CRANE at
the Calgary Zoo's private breeding Ranch south of Calgary on Friday, Aug.
26, while around 2 pm Thursday, Aug 25, Dave Brown reported a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK roosted on a fence in his back yard in Calgary Saddleridge for a
least one half-hour.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, September 1.
