This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "highlights" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

Birders were definitely hitting the patches hard this week! Highlights were
a pair of BLACK-THROATED SPARROWS in Del Norte County and a LITTLE GULL
scoped from Patricks Point State Park in Humboldt County.

At 2441 Copenhagen road, in Loleta, 7 EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES were seen
(Jean Charles).
At King Salmon 2 PACIFIC LOONS and 8 MARBLED MURRELETS. The observer noted
that the day before (31 April) he had 2 MARBLED MURRELETS, the first he saw
in Humboldt Bay this year (Matt Wachs).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY 4 RED KNOTS and 1 SABINE'S GULL was in the vicinity of
Elk Creek at Crescent City.Two ARCTIC TERNS were seen off of Front Street.
At the end of Pala Road in the Smith River Bottoms, with a flock of
lingering ALEUTIAN CACKLING GOOSE, was a single presumed BRANT X ALEUTIAN
CACKLING GOOSE (Lucas.....).
Inland at the mouth of Willow Creek were 15 DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS. The
observer noted coutship behavior with some of these cormorants last Monday
(24 April). A RUFFED GROUSE was seen on forest road 10N02, south of Orleans
(Tom Leskiw).
A PALM WARBLER was seen off of I-street at the Arcata Marsh (Steve Gelman
[spelling?]).
2 May

An observer scoping for shorebirds on north Humboldt Bay noted the following
estimates: 80,000 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 20,000 DUNLIN, 3,000 LEAST SANDPIPERS,
2,000 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 200 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 200 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 40 MARBLED GODWITS, 15 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 5 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 1
BLACK TURNSTONE, 3 WILLETS, 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
60 CASPIAN TERNS and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS.
At Prairie Creek State Park, many MARBLED MURRELETS were heard, few were
seen. Interesting at Prairie Creek were a pair of HOUSE SPARROWS, possibly
the first reported for this location (David Fix).
On the V-street Loop, in the Arcata Bottoms, 14 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were
present (Scott Carey).
3 May

A SWAINSON'S THRUSH was seen at "Opera Alley" between K and L streets in
Eureka (Gary Lester).
A BALD EAGLE was seen flying over the Bayside Cutoff (Scott Carey).
The highlight of a 5.5 hour seawatch at Patrick's Point was an adult LITTLE
GULL in with flock of Bonaparte's Gulls. Other highlights were 2 alternate
plumaged PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVERS, and 3 COMMON TERNS followed by 2 PARASITIC
JAEGERS. A total of 1,468 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 6,135 PACIFIC LOONS, 232
RED-THROATED LOONS, and 148 COMMON LOONS (Barry Sauppe).
4 May
-----------
A ROCK WREN was seen at Gold Bluff Beach (Heather Brown).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY, 2 BLACK-THROATED SPARROWS were found at High Bluff
Overlook off of Aldercamp road. Aldercamp road is accessed heading west off
of the Klamath Beach exit from Highway 101 (Greg Holmes fide Kerry Ross [who
also saw the bird]).
A CHIPPING SPARROW was seen at a farm in Blue Lake (Paul Lohse).
In the forest behind College of the Redwoods were and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH (Laura Brinkley [last name?]).
In the town of Trinidad, a 2nd year GLAUCOUS GULL was present at Indian
Beach, as were 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. Two LARK SPARROWS were 1 block west of
the lighthouse (Melody Hamilton).
5 May

In DEL NORTE COUNTY both BLACK-THROATED SPARROWS were seen and heard in the
previously mentioned location. Back in Humboldt County 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS
were found in a pond on the south side of Davison Road, 103 ALEUTIAN
CACKLING GEESE lingered on Hufford Road in Orick; 1 PEREGRINE FALCON was
present also (Rob Fowler).
At King Salmon 37 MARBLED MURRELETS and 1 BLACK SCOTER were found (Matt
Wachs).
At the North Jetty 19 MARBLED MURRELETS, 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, and 2 RUDDY
TURNSTONES were the highlights. One RED KNOT and 8 RUDDY TURNSTONES were
present at Klopp Lake. Eleven RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were on the V-street
Loop (Scott Carey).
6 May

At a private residence, north of the town of Orick, were 50-70 BAND-TAILED
PIGEONS (Colleen Kelly Marks).
At Klopp Lake, Arcata Marsh, 32 RED KNOTS (30 in alternate plumage) and 8
RUDDY TURNSTONES were seen. At the Mad River Fish Hatchery and the Blue Lake
Cottonwoods a total of 4 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were detected. At the
V-street Loop 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE continued (Scott Carey).
In Trinidad, a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK came to a feeder at a
residence. The observer also noted a late FOX and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
(Melody Hamilton).
7 May
-----------
At Hiller Park, in McKinleyville, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BONAPARTE'S GULL, and
1 CASSIN'S VIREO were the highlights. The observer noted that renovations on
the ponds there have created great shorebird habitat with over 700
shorebirds present (Kerry Ross).
A DUSKY FLYCATCHER and TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE were noted on Titlow Hill Road
(Scott Carey).
