***MESSAGE FROM EDITORS: “MICHIGAN BIRDS AND NATURAL HISTORY”***
The co-managing editors, Raymond Adams & Allen Chartier, of our state
ornithological journal: “Michigan Birds and Natural History” are actively
seeking a new Editor to take the place of the late Jim Granlund, starting
this fall, with the production of the first 2007 issue. If anyone (or a
team) is interested in taking on the MBNH editorship, or if you know someone
who may be a good candidate, we want to hear from you soon! Please contact
Ray Adams, Adamsknc@aol.com
LIVINGSTON COUNTY – A CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW* was heard just before dawn on May
4th, at an unknown location within the county. No other information is
available at this time.
BERRIEN COUNTY – A CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW* was heard the evening of May 7th, near
the intersection of Jones Road and Long Lake Road in Berrien Township. On
subsequent days, the bird has been heard at other points along Jones Road,
and heard distantly from True Road. Most recent report was May 9th. This is
the same area that produced a CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW* from May to July 2005. 2
EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES* continue to be seen in and around the village park
at Three Oaks. Apart from the park itself, the birds have been seen behind
the house that is a photography studio, and towards the grain elevator,
which lies to the north of the park. A SUMMER TANAGER was seen May 6th and
May 7th, at Sarett Nature Centers “Prairie Restoration” area, which lies to
the south of the main entrance to the nature center.
MACOMB COUNTY – A TRICOLORED HERON* was found May 8th near Point Rosa at
Metro Beach Metropark. This is "all the way to the right" when you get into
the park. Follow the signs for the Day Sail Ramp and walk the trail to the
right/shore from the parking area. The park is at the east end of Metro
Parkway (16 Mile Rd) east of I-94.
WAYNE COUNTY – A BELL’S VIREO* was reported seen May 6th, at Van Buren Park.
Van Buren Park is on the South I94 Service Drive between Rawsonville and
Belleville Road. (Nearer to Rawsonville). The gates are not unlocked until
7:00 am.
HILLSDALE COUNTY -- A KENTUCKY WARBLER has been present from May 3rd to at
least May 9th.
Directions: From the intersection of Skuse Rd. and Gilbert Rd., go 1/3 mile
east on Skuse to
a parking area on the south. Walk south about 100 yards from this point and
you should start hearing the KENTUCKY WARBLER, which has been in this
location for several years.
ALGER COUNTY – A SNOWY EGRET was seen on the morning of May 8th, on Munising
Bay. Specifically, it was seen on the sandbar amidst the gulls to the
northeast of the fishing pier at the mouth of the Anna River, just to the
east of the paper mill in Munising.
MARQUETTE COUNTY – A breeding-plumaged LITTLE BLUE HERON was found May 4th,
at the old Sand River DNR flooding near the eastern border of Marquette
County. It was relocated as late as May 6th.
ALLEGAN COUNTY – A WORM-EATING WARBLER was discovered May 6th, at the
Allegan State Game Area. Directions: Park where 118th crosses Swan Creek,
and walk north along the east bank of the creek. The bird was approximately
1/2 mile north along the trail, up at the top of a steep bluff, to the
right. You may need to walk up to the top of the bluff to see it. It was
not singing very often, and it was moving around quite a bit, so it wouldn't
surprise me if the bird is just a migrant.
BAY COUNTY – A CATTLE EGRET was found on May 5th, on Patterson Road. On May
8th, an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was seen at the Karn Power Plant in Bay City.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, May 18th,
2006. To report your sightings, please leave a message at the sound of the
tone, or call Jon Wuepper at 269-556-9510. Thank you for calling and good
birding.
