A 1st-year GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL was seen at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary
on Monday, May 8. The bird was seen by Ray Wershler, and was located on the south
island on the Bow River at the north end of the Sanctuary. Though still rare in the
area, the species has become an annual spring vagrant here in the past 5-6 years.

A LE CONTE'S SPARROW was heard at Frank Lake east of High River last weekend. The
bird was detected by Al MacKeigan off the access road to the blind. This is the
first report of the species in our area this spring season.

Other new arrivals recently included a SAY'S PHOEBE seen by Phil Cram, Chris Havard,
and Milt Spitzer on Wednesday, May 10 at the Twp Rd 270 - Rge Rd 253 junction in the
Irricana Sloughs. At a slough on the south side of Hwy 567 4kms east of Airdrie
they also observed a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER amongst other shorebirds.

Molly Milne and Jack Godfrey watched a male AMERICAN GOLDFINCH in the Marlborough
district of Calgary on Saturday, May 6. If a spring arrival, this bird would be
ahead of schedule.

Other recent reports of interest include a ROSS'S GOOSE seen by Al MacKeigan last
weekend on the water near the blind at Frank Lake on Hwy 23, 6kms east of Hwy 2 at
High River. Rob Worona and a CFNS Field Trip observed a PEREGRINE FALCON at
Beaverdam Flats in Calgary on May 9, while Mary Huston saw both an EASTERN PHOEBE at
the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on May 6, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at Votier's
Flats in west Fish Creek PP on May 5.

The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Monday, May 15.
