This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Migration has picked up during the past week in the Duluth area, with
a good showing of warblers and other migrants in the fog and rain on
Park Point on the 10th. Jason Caddy found 12 warbler species near
the Sky Harbor Airport, including BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, GOLDEN-
WINGED WARBLER, and CAPE MAY WARBLER. Molly Thompson found 11
warbler species on the same day, including NORTHERN PARULA and GOLDEN-
WINGED WARBLER, as well as a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD near the airport
fence. Sarah and Dave Grosshuesch found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on
the 5th in Two Harbors at Lighthouse Point, and it was still present
on the 6th.
Lori Evrard reported a male WESTERN TANANGER on the 10th on the shore
of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, Cook County.
Mike Hendrickson found an ARCTIC TERN and three RED-THROATED LOONS on
the 8th at the Park Point recreation area. Mike saw 1,300
BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Hearding Island on the 6th. Peder Svingen found
two SURF SCOTERS and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER AT Park Point on the 8th.
Jan Green reported a ROSS'S GOOSE on Interstate Island in the Duluth
harbor today and DOWITCHERS at the Park Point recreation area on the
10th. Lars Benson found a BLACKPOLL WARBLER on Park Point on the
8th.
Celeste Kawulok found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 6th in
the Sax-Zim Bog along Owl Avenue near the Arkola Road (CR 52). Jason
Caddy found a BOREAL CHICKADEE along the McDavitt Road on the 6th.
Pat Pierman recently had a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in her yard along
the East Hunter's Lake Road north of Duluth. Uwe Kausch had a male
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the 8th in his yard on the Wildwood Road,
a mile west of the Homestead Road. A VESPER SPARROW was seen on the
8th in downtown Two Harbors at 1st Avenue and 8th Street.
Other recent spring arrivals in the area include SEMIPALMATED PLOVER
today, FORSTER'S TERN, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BANK SWALLOW, VEERY,
TENESSEE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART on the 10th, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN
THRASHER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH, SCARLET TANAGER, BOBOLINK, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE on the
9th, LEAST FLYCATCHER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK on the 8th, CHIMNEY SWIFT on the 7th, CASPIAN TERN on the
6th, and COMMON TERN and WHIP-POOR-WILL on the 5th.
