Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for May 11,
2006. This report covers the period from May 5th to May 11th and will be updated
on
May 18th.
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found and photographed at the north end of
Block Island on the 5th. On the 7th, another YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was seen
at Miantonomi Park in Newport.
Other sightings from the 5th on Block Island include: 1 RED-THROATED LOON,
20 COMMON LOON, 2 NORTHERN GANNET, 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 15 COMMON
EIDER, 4 SURF SCOTER, 5 RING-NECKED PHEASANT, 1 LAUGHING GULL, 3 EASTERN KINGBIRD,
4 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 3 WARBLING VIREO, 2 RED-EYED VIREO, 20 RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 2 SCARLET TANAGER, 1 INDIGO BUNTING, 3 ORCHARD
ORIOLE and 20 BALTIMORE ORIOLE. Fourteen species of warbler were seen
including 1 BLUE-WINGED, 12 NORTHERN PARULA, 2 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, over 100
YELLOW-RUMPED, 8 BLACK-THROATED GREEN, 1 PINE WARBLER, 2 PRAIRIE, 2 PALM, 1
BLACKPOLL, 15 BLACK-AND-WHITE, 4 OVENBIRD, and 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Reports from Miantonomi Park on the 5th and 7th and 11th: 2 GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 4 BALTIMORE ORIOLE, 7 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER,
2 PRAIRIE WARBLER, 3 NASHVILLE WARBLER, 2 BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 4 NORTHERN
PARULA, 6 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 7 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 1
WORM-EATING WARBLER, 1 SCARLET TANAGER, 1 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and 1 BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO.
The female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL returned to the feeder in the Rumford
section of East Providence on the 5th and 6th. At a different feeder also
located in East Providence a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was briefly seen on the 7th.
Swan Point Cemetery had the following highlights on the 5th: 1 SWAINSON'S
THRUSH, 1 SCARLET TANAGER, 2 SWAMP SPARROW, 1 SAVANNAH SPARROW, 16 BALTIMORE
ORIOLE, 11 WARBLING VIREO, 3 BLUE-HEADED VIREO and 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
Warblers included: 12 BLACK-AND-WHITE, 46 YELLOW-RUMPED, 2 NASHVILLE, 5
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 1 CAPE MAY, 1 BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 1
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 1 MAGNOLIA, 1 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER, 11
NORTHERN PARULA and 5 OVENBIRD. On the 6th, lesser numbers of birds were
sighted and the highlight was a continuing CAPE-MAY WARBLER. On the 7th there
was a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, a CLIFF SWALLOW, and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS was found
by the river.
On the 8th at Roger Williams Park in Providence a WILSON'S WARBLER was
reported.
At the Great Swamp Management Area on the 7th, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1
NASHVILLE WARBLER, 2 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 3 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and 2
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. At Gennesse Swamp, 1 VIRGINIA RAIL was found that day.
On the 6th at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED
SPARROW, 1 LEAST TERN, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LITTLE BLUE HERON and 1 LAUGHING GULL.
One BOBOLINK was found along Card's Pond Road in Matunuck on the 6th.
In Jamestown, along Weedon Lane, in the farm field with the cows, 1 CATTLE
EGRET was found on the 11th.
On the 11th, at Third Beach Restoration area in Middletown, 1 BLACK-HEADED
GULL, 3 LAUGHING GULL, 40 WILLET and 15 Brant were found.
Finally, a NORTHERN BOBWHITE was seen in West Kingston on the 10th.
