EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -

This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, May 12.

The persistent northeast winds and associated wet weather have put a damper on
migration this week. At a time when spring migrants returning to or passing
through the state are usually approaching a peak, reports have been
relatively few.

A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON has been present this week at a
pond off Commerce Way in North Andover.

A KING RAIL found on Tuesday at the Great Meadows Refuge in Concord
was still present there today.

Also at the Meadows this morning were 7 RED PHALAROPES, oceanic
sandpipers that were no doubt driven inland by the wind, an AMERICAN
BITTERN, and a PIED-BILLED GREBE. Roughly 300 CHIMNEY SWIFTS
were also noted at Great Meadows this week.

Seen at Plum Island were 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 1 BLACK-HEADED
GULL, 1 SNOWY OWL and 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO.

Counted coming into the evening roost at Kettle Island in Manchester were
15 GREAT EGRETS, 163 SNOWY EGRETS, 8 LITTLE BLUE HERONS
and 47 GLOSSY IBISES.

Reports from Nantucket this week included 1 NORTHERN SHOVELER,
1 TRICOLORED HERON, 100 LEAST TERNS, 1 COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
2 ORCHARD ORIOLES and 1 EVENING GROSBEAK.

Miscellaneous reports included 12 TERNS along the Merrimack
River between Haverhill and West Newbury, a GREAT EGRET at Bolton
Flats, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW in Gardner, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW and
a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at the Drumlin Farms Sanctuary in
Lincoln, a WHITE-EYED VIREO in North Reading, 1 RUDDY DUCK in
Jamaica Plain, a CAPE MAY WARBLER, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW and
2 ORCHARD ORIOLES at the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan, 3
PURPLE SANDPIPERS and an ICELAND GULL in Manomet section of
Plymouth, and 36 GREATER SHEARWATERS off Sandy Neck in Barnstable.

Good luck tomorrow to all the teams participating in this year's
Massachusetts Audubon Birdathon and thank you for calling.
