EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -

This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, May 15.

Despite the heavy weather over the weekend (and in some cases because
of it), the
many teams participating in Mass Audubon's annual Birdathon were well
rewarded.
The biggest story of the weekend was seabirds. The easterly winds and heavy
rains associated with the weekend storm swept many seabirds in from the ocean
resulting in their appearance at the coast and even at points inland.

Yesterday, an unidentified ALBATROSS was seen at Sandy Neck in Barnstable,
where other seabirds included 1 GREATER SHEARWATER, 1 LEACH'S STORM-
PETREL, 2 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 300 NORTHERN GANNETS, 2
POMARINE JAEGERS, 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, roughly 150
RED PHALAROPES, and 100 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

Two day seabird totals from Saturday and Sunday at Corporation Beach in
Dennis included 28 RED-THROATED LOONS, 13 COMMON LOONS, 5
MANX SHEARWATERS, 3 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 3700 NORTHERN
GANNETS, 35 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 261 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES, 85 RED PHALAROPES, 3 POMARINE JAEGERS, 46
PARASITIC JAEGERS, 1 LONG-TAILED JAEGER, 1 SABINE'S GULL,
8 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 26 ROSEATE TERNS, roughly 1000
COMMON TERNS, 4 ARCTIC TERNS, 1200 unidentified
Common/Arctic-type terns, and 2 BLACK TERNS.

The two day totals from Andrew's Point in Rockport included 30 RED-
THROATED LOONS, 22 MANX SHEARWATERS, 4 WILSON'S STORM-
PETRELS, 9 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, roughly 700 NORTHERN
GANNETS, 30 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 387 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES
(though only 1 the first day), 1 RED PHALAROPE, 23 PARASITIC JAEGERS
(though only one the second day), 7 POMARINE JAEGERS, 1 LONG-TAILED
JAEGER, 21 LAUGHING GULLS, 51 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 1
CASPIAN TERN, 2 COMMON TERNS, 75 ARCTIC TERNS, 1 BLACK
GUILLEMOT, and 2 COMMON MURRES.

At Race Point in Provincetown there were 5 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 1
LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, 450 NORTHERN GANNETS, 74 RED
PHALAROPES, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 1 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE,
and 110 COMMON TERNS.

A remarkable number of seabirds were seen away from the immediate
coast as well.
Reports within the past three days from the Merrimack River in Haverhill have
included 6 RED PHALAROPES, 85 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 40
BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 2 ARCTIC TERNS, and a BLACK TERN, seen at the
Chestnut Hill Reservoir in Newton yesterday were 8 RED-NECKED
