This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

The top highlights this week were Northwestern California's 45th record of
BLACK TERN and 24th record of WHITE-WINGED DOVE. The first NORTHERN PARULA
of the season was also reported. EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES seem to be
continuing their invasion of this region in California with 2 reports this
week....

In the forest off of Redwood in Cutten (Eureka) there were 5 singing HERMIT
WARLBERS (Gary Lester).


8 May
----------
Highlights from a Humboldt County big day were: 1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE off of
Samoa Boulevard, AMERICAN BITTERN at Humboldt Bay NWR, and MARBLED MURRELETS
and BLACK SCOTERS on the ocean off of Freshwater Lagoon (Rob Hewitt).

At the Arcata Marsh Project an adult BALD EAGLE was seen (Tom Leskiw).

9 May

A EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was seen at a private residence in McKinleyville
(Kerry Ross).

10 May
-----------
In the Cutten area of Eureka 4 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen (Gary Lester).

A 5 hour seawatch from Patrick's Point State Park produced an adult BLACK
TERN and 8 adult SABINE'S GULLS. A WHITE-WINGED DOVE, present since the 8th
of May, was seen again in the backyard of observerin Eureka and was reported
to be coming in regularly (Barry Sauppe).

11 May

At Elk Head 5 LAZULI BUNTINGS and 1 WESTERN KINGBIRD were seen at the
huckleberry patch. A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen west of College Cove in
Trinidad (Melodie Hamilton).

12 May
-----------
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen at 141 G Street, in Arcata (Elias Elias).

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was ween along the Eel River, 700 meters south of
Sandy Prairie Road (Ken Burton).

13 May
-----------
In Blue Lake 4 WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen about 1/4 mile before the Blue
Lake Fish Hatchery. At the Arcata Oxidation Ponds 50 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES
and 1 YELLOW WARBLER were the highlights (Scott Carey).

The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was still present on G Street in Arcata. A RUDDY
TURNSTONE was seen on the Klopp Lake levy at the Arcata Marsh (Elias Elias).

14 May
-----------
Two probable EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES were seen at 1600 Balboa in
McKinleyville (Sandra Hunt Von Arb).

A NORTHERN PARULA was seen at the Big Lagoon School (Ken Irwin).

At Humboldt Bay NWR 1-2 SORAS were heard (possibly breeding?), as were 2
VIRGINIA RAILS. An AMERICAN BITTERN was also seen and was suspected to be
breeding here. At 13th and I Street in Arcata 41 VAUX'S SWIFTS were seen
(David Fix).

Six BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were seen in a backyard off of West End Road in Arcata
(Bill Becker).
