The co-managing editors, Raymond Adams & Allen Chartier, of our state
ornithological journal: “Michigan Birds and Natural History” are actively
seeking a new Editor to take the place of the late Jim Granlund, starting
this fall, with the production of the first 2007 issue. If anyone (or a
team) is interested in taking on the MBNH editorship, or if you know someone
who may be a good candidate, we want to hear from you soon! Please contact

BERRIEN COUNTY – CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW* continues to broadcast its distinctive
call, nightly, along Jones Road, near intersection with Long Lake Road. 2
EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES* remain at Three Oaks. Look for then in and around
the village park at corner of US-12 and Ash Street. A WILSON’S PHALAROPE
(May 16th) and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (May 15-16th) have been present at
Three Oaks Wastewater Ponds. A PIPING PLOVER was seen May 14th at Silver
Beach in Saint Joseph.
MARQUETTE COUNTY – Received too late for last weeks report was a PAINTED
BUNTING*, seen May 10th, at the home of Gail Junkkari in the town of
Marquette. The bird has not been seen since.
IOSCO COUNTY – a male WESTERN TANAGER* was found May 13th, among the Jack
Pines at Tawas Point.
OTTAWA COUNTY - 1-2 AMERICAN AVOCETS have been seen from May 13th through
May 17th, at the dredge ponds in Holland. These ponds are on the south side
of East Lakewood Blvd. just east of Waverly Rd.(120th Ave.). Access East
Lakewood from US-31. The exit is the one north of the Bussiness Route I-196
exit on US-31. Vantage points can be found at the large sign for the dredge
ponds or at the west end at a green gate. At the later you can walk along
the paved bike path (Macatawa Greenway) as it circumnavigates the ponds and
get great views of the mud flats.
WAYNE COUNTY – A WORM-EATING WARBLER was discovered on May 11th on Belle
Isle, close to the location in which one was found in 2005. The observer
stated: “from the tennis courts it was on the South side of Nashua Creek
roughly 400 yards past the second bridge.” On May 12th, a CATTLE EGRET was
seen in a pasture on the northwest corner of Willow Road and Carlton West
(or West Carlton).
BARAGA COUNTY – A male WESTERN TANAGER* has been seen since May 9th at the
feeders of Cathy Wadaga, just west of Baraga. Birders are welcome to come
see the bird; it frequents the feeders in between the road and the house.
Directions: take M-38 west out of the town of Baraga for a few miles to
Baraga Plains Road. Go left on Baraga Plains and drive about a mile. Her
home is on the right side of the road, house number 509.
MACKINAC COUNTY – 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were found May 12th, at the tip of
Point La Barbe.
BENZIE COUNTY – A LAUGHING GULL was seen and photographed May 12th, at the
mouth of the Platte River.
BAY COUNTY – 2 SNOWY EGRETS (exact locations not known) were reported on May
13th during the North American Migration Count.
MANISTEE COUNTY – a female HARLEQUIN DUCK was found May 13th, along the
south break wall in Manistee.
MUSKEGON COUNTY – 10 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen during the afternoon
of May 15th, resting on a sandbar at the east end of
Muskegon Lake.
JACKSON COUNTY – A WILSON’S PHALAROPE was located in the wetlands on the
east side of Hawkins Road, just north of Jordan Road. This area is northeast
of the city of Jackson and north of Seymour Road. The WILSON’S PHALAROPE and
other shorebirds were visible through the narrow window from the gate at the
south end of the property.
ALLEGAN COUNTY – A KENTUCKY WARBLER was found May 15th, behind the home of
Rick Brigham in the town of Douglas. Directions: Take either of the two
Saugatuck/Douglas exits from I-196 onto the Blue Star Highway. (A-2) Head
right in either case until you come to the only stop light at Center Street
in Douglas. Continue one block south to Fremont Street (In the case of those
of you who are coming from the south you will turn one block before the
light.) Take this west and in less than a block just before the end of the
street is 393 on the left. The drive is long and narrow and you can park on
the left side near the garage.
