Thursday May 18, 2006 with reports of Frigatebird sp, White-faced
Ibis, Black-necked Stilt, Curlew Sandpiper, Eurasian Collared-Dove,
Roseate Tern, Sedge Wren, Clay-colored Sparrow, seasonal and local
report of interest, and announcements
A female FRIGATEBIRD sp was found at the Cape May Meadows May 18
[still present at 6 PM - LL]. Up to six WHITE-FACED IBIS were found
in Cape May County this week, including one at Timber Beaver Swamp.
A CURLEW SANDPIPER continued at the Heislerville impoundment in
Cumberland County: call the CMBO Hotline for more information.
Another FRIGATEBIRD sp, this one an all-dark bird, was found over
Sandy Hook May 18 and seen later heading up the Navesink River in
Middletown. A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen briefly in the trees
opposite the garden the same day. Also there May 18 were ALDER
FLYCATCHER, 19 species of warbler including TENNESSEE WARBLER, 6+ BAY-
BREASTED WARBLERS, 2 CAPE MAY WARBLERS, and 4 WILSON'S WARBLERS, and
a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the field on the south side of Gunnison
Rd. A KENTUCKY WARBLER was found in the locust grove May 17; also
there that day were YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and 3 LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS. A SEDGE WREN was an excellent find at Plum Island May 16.
Also noted that day were ROSEATE TERN, MISSISSIPPI KITE, and several
CLIFF SWALLOWS at North Beach. Two ROSEATE TERNS were viewed at the
false hook, halfway between the end of the fisherman's trail and
north beach pavilion May 15. Four BLACK TERNS were counted at the
hook the same day. Sandy Hook tallied 150 species of birds May 13
including a singing LEAST BITTERN, all six swallow sp, and a fly-by
MISSISSIPPI KITE all at North Pond, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and 5
SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS at Plum Island, and calling ALDER
FLYCATCHER in the locust grove. A free, detailed birding map of
Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for
daily reports.

the marsh south of the Spizzle Creek Blind trail. An OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER was on the Reeds Rd Trail the same day. A CERULEAN
WARBLER was a rare migrant at Island Beach May 13. Also in Ocean
County May 13 was an exceptionally late TUNDRA SWAN at Whitesbog and
Chuck-wills-Widow at Manahawkin WMA.
The BLACK-NECKED STILT was found again at Brigantine NWR May 17.
The previously reported immature ICELAND GULL was noted again May 16
at South Amboy (Morgan) along with a CASPIAN TERN. For more

A BLACK TERN was found at Spruce Run Reservoir May 15.
Garret Mountain had an impressive 8+ CAPE MAY WARBLERS May 18. Also
there that day were BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, and 2 GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSHES. On May 17 a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted, two OLIVE-
SIDED FLYCATCHERS were found near the bathrooms above the three-tier
parking lot, and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen along Barbour's
Pond. Garret's cumulative list for May 13 was 95+ species including
2 COMMON RAVENS, 15 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
Other birds there this week included TENNESSEE WARBLER and BAY-
BREASTED WARBLER among 23+ warbler species recorded.
The Allendale Celery Farm hosted a MOURNING WARBLER May 18. Also
there this week were AMERICAN BITTERN, CLIFF SWALLOW, and a late
RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
A pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS was observed south of Layton this week. On
Rte 640 just south of Peter's Valley there is a large conifer grove
on the left. Towards the end of the grove Rte 640 curves right and a
dirt road goes straight ahead. At the beginning of the dirt road
take the path that goes left towards a stream. The birds were active
in the brushy area along the trail. Also in Sussex County this week
were YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER along Van Ness Rd
in the Delaware Water Gap NRA. From Layton head west on CR 560.
Take the first right after the park sign (unmarked road called Van
Ness) and stop at the junction with the first left-hand road. The
birds have been heard here (DeLorme P. 18, G-10). An interesting
warbler that appears to be a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER but sings a
strange song has returned this year south of Peter's Valley in the
spruces along the fishing access trail below the "Mile 9" marker on
Rte 615.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
All birders visiting Garret Mountain Reservation in the upcoming
weeks are advised to use the two larger parking lots within the park.
Do not park on the sides of Rifle Camp Rd; the police will issue
summons. This is a request from the Passaic County Parks Department
and Passaic County Sheriff's Office.
