This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for May 18, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Black Rails,
White Ibis, Gray Hawks.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, and Clark's Nutcrackers.
Some areas have increased fire restrictions due to the drought.

In Sandoval County:
BH on May 13 at Cocvhiti Lake had a COMMON LOON in winter plumage. Two
third-year CALFORNIA GULLS, 29 FRANKLIN’S GULLS, and again saw the BLACK HAWK
soaring below the spillway. He had a DUSKY FLYCATCHER at the Dixon Apple
Orchards near Cochiti Pueblo.
On May 12 KH reported two pairs of RED CROSSBILLS and a CLARK’S NUTCRACKER
on a dirt road south of NM 4 east of the Redondo Campground in the Jemez Mts.
west of Los Alamos.
TB had a PEACH-FACED LOVEBIRD escape in Corrales May 13.

In Rio Arriba County:
NC reported that DS on May 13 reported a BOBOLINK in a hayfield on the Ghost
Ranch near Abiquiu.

In Santa Fe County:
JK on May 9 at the Lamy train station saw a female INDIGO BUNTING. There
was an EASTERN PHOEBE by the river in Galisteo.
JW reported BURROWING OWLS have been seen on the runways of the Santa Fe
Airport.

In San Miguel County:
RV had a WOOD THRUSH at the golf couse pond at Conchas Lake on May 13 with a
BELL’S VIREO, VERMILION FLYCATCHER, and BROWN THRASHER. JP recorded the
thrush, singing vireo, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW May 13.
At the adjacent Clabber Hill Ranch on May 12-13 RV recorded calling BLACK
RAILS. They were calling for MH, MB, JNM, JP and BP on May 14. The ranch is
private; for permission to bird call Tony Gabel at 868-3351.

In Colfax County:
DC and EWi on May 10-11 had an adult male KENTUCKY WARBLER in Angel Fire at
a beaver pond on El Vado Way on the north side of the road.
DC at Stubblefield Lake on May 13 saw six BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. Four STILT
SANDPIPERS, five RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were
present on May 16.
At Springer Lake on May 13 DC recorded an amazing 51 SANDERLINGS and two
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.

In Quay County:
The CR field trip to Tucumcari on May 6 had three CHIMNEY SWIFTS over the
Post Office with five more over Tucumcari Lake. At the corner of Rock Island
and Maple there were over nine MISSISSIPPI KITES, RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS,
CASSIN’S and CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, an ORCHARD ORIOLE, and a food carrying
EASTERN BLUEBIRD. At Pajarito Creek there were a CARDINAL and an EASTERN PHOEBE.
At the lake there were also a SEMIPALMATED and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER.
DC at Ute Lake State Park at the headquarters area on May 4 found two LEAST
TERNS. The CR trip on May 6 found the COMMON LOON still present with a
CATBIRD, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, two male ORCHARD ORIOLES, and five CLAY-COLORED
SPARROWS.

In Bernalillo County:
JJ heard one WHIP-POOR-WILL at the Doc Long Picnic Area in the eastern
Sandia Mts. on May 6 with a FLAMMULATED OWL heard between the two main parking
areas.
SD on May 13 found an EVENING GROSBEAK with CEDAR WAXWINGS on the west side
of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque off the Paseo del Norte Bridge easting
mulberries.
DP had on May 10 an OVENBIRD along the Bosque Trail at the crIO Grande
Nature Center in Albuquerque between trail markers 14 and 15. He saw it again on
May 11. On May 13 there was a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH slong the small ditch
south of Campbell.
JJ had two BURROWING OWLS south of the Costco on Eubank Street on May 7.
JKn at the ponds at 4th and Tramway Streets on May 11 had three MISSISSIPPI
KITES.
JJ on May 11 found a SWAINSON;S THRUSH on the east side of the Rioo Grande
south of Cesar Chavez Ave. Watch for transient humans in this area. On May
12 he found a male HOODED WARBLER on the east side of the Rio north of Bridge
Blvd. And the waterthrush between Tingley Beach and the rio.

In Valencia County:
WW had a NASHVILLE WARBLER and a CATBIRD near the Madrone Ponds in Belen on
May 10.

In Torrance County:
On the May 13 field trip led by HS at the Quarai Ruins JJ reported a female
AMERICAN REDSTART.
WW on May 10 found 15 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 25 WILSON’S PHALAROPES on the
sewage ponds in Mountainair.

In DeBaca County:
On May 13 CCBr on NM 20 found an EASTERN KINGBIRD.
JP and BP on May 6 at Sumner Lake north of Fort Sumner had three COMMON
LOONS and a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. On May 12 he reported 80 BLACK TERNS.
At a pond at Billy the Kid’s Grave south of Fort Sumner JP had a calling
LEAST BITTERN.

In Roosevelt County:
JP and BP had on May 6 the EASTERN TOWHEE, singing WHITE-EYED VIREO,
NASHVILLE WARBLER, female BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, male AMERICAN REDSTART, TOWNSEND’
S WARBLER, and five CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS. On May 7 they had a KENTUCKY
WARBLER, RED-EYED VIREO, and SWAINSON’S THRUSHN,and on May 11 a BROWN THRASHER
and two CATBIRDS, with a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and
TOWNSEND’S WARBLER on May 12, and the yellow-throated vireo, thrasher, and a male
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on May 13. MH, JB, BW ON May 15 found the redstart,
yellow-throated vireo, catbirds, several flycatchers, sparrow, and grosbeak.
Also sighted were
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, BOBOLINK, and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. lg and
CD on May 17 found RED-EYED VIREO, four of the thrushes, WORM-EATING WARBLER,
the female grosbeak, a female PAINTED BUNTING, SWAMP SPARROW, and female
ORCHARD ORIOLE.
Another GLOSSY IBIS was on the Portales Sewage Ponds on May 11 by JP and BP.
JB, LL, and JNM on May 6 found a smoldering fire in Boones Draw near
Portales. A male BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was seen. JP had a BRONZED COWBIRD
present on May 10.

In Curry County:
JP and BP at the Clovis Sewage Ponds on May 11 had a one year old LAUGHING
GULL and a GLOSSY IBIS.
At Ned Houk Park north of Clovis on May 10 they had a SORA and three BRONZED
COWBIRDS.

In Socorro County:
DH on May May 13 had a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER on the road between I-25
and exit 163 at San Acacia.
On May 13 JO found a GRAY HAWK in the bosque south of San Marcial 3.1 miles
south of the access road bridge.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio GF on May 1 had TURKEYS, LEAST
BITTERN and two MOORHENS on the Marsh Boardwalk.. He saw a TRICOLORED HERON
at the east end of the middle road. May 10 gf found a SNOW GOOSE, three
CALIFORNIA GULLS, CATBIRD, and INDIGO BUNTING.
GF at Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro on May 10 saw a CATBIRD,
an AMERICAN REDSTART, a female SCARLET TANAGER, a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK,
and several INDIGO BUNTINGS, with a pair of BRONZED COWBIRDS on the 9th tee of
the golf course.
At his home in Luis Lopez south of Socorro JO on May 11 had a SCOTT’S
ORIOLE, with a COMMON GRACKLE on May 12.
In Water Canyon west of Socorro SM reports that the campground is closed and
will be moved to a new site. A trail is to be built for birding.

In Catron County:
JH had an INCA DOVE on May 9 and 13, a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD on May 12, and
an EVENING GROSBEAK on May 13.
RC had a DIPPER at the Whitewater Canyon Catwalk near Glenwood on May 13.

In Chaves County:
On Bitter Lake Refuge JP and BP saw the adult WHITE IBIS on May 7, PS and EH
on May 8, and JO on May 10. GW found a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on Unit 3 and
heard the LEAST BITTERN on Units 15 or 16 on May 3. JO had the goose and
bittern on May 10. CL and CCBr on May 5 found MISSISSIPPI KITES. CCBr on May 14
found at the Oxbow on the refuge up to 40 kites. On the refuge on May 17 GW
had a singing male BOBOLINK on Unit 5, a closed area. If one asks at the
office for permission to see it from 7:30 to 5 weekdays, permission will be
granted.

In Sierra County:
On May 13 at Percha Dam State Park RC had a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER and HAMMOND’
S FLYCATCHER. He found many dry dead trees on Emory Pass in the Black Range.

In Grant County:
RC had calling WHIP-POOR-WILLS, FLAMMULATED and SPOTTED OWLS in the Pinos
Altos Mts. north of Silver City on MAY 13. He had BENDIRE’S THRASHER along the
Gila Rio at Redrock and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER at Roberts Lake.
In Silver City DMZ had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in their yard through May 13,
a CARDINAL on May 7, a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW on May 10, and a ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK on May 13. EL had a CRISSAL THRASHER in his yard on May 10. TM had
an EASTERN PHOEBE in her yard on May 9.
At the Gila River Farm near Cliff MF had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on May 13,
RS had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK ON May 8, MF had an EASTERN PHOEBE on May 9.
RS had 51 WHITE-FACED IBIS near Gila on May 1 and 22 at Mangas Springs.
On May 13 DMZ and on May 14 EL had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at the Tyrone
Sewage Ponds.
KM and DB had an EASTERN PHOEBE at Redrock on May 6.
JP had an OSPREY at Roberts Lake on May 10. JDM at her home there on May 2
had a BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD and a MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD May 15.

In Hidalgo County:
CCBr at Dunagan’s Crossing on county Hwy. 1 south of Animas say they heard
from the owner that he is selling his 100 acres there.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
On May 12 CL had a CATBIRD and an INDIGO BUNTING in the Mountain View
Cemetery in Deming.
He had another indigo and a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER in Pancho Villa State Park
near Columbus on 14.
LM in his Deming yard in mid-May had a GRAY VIREO, HOODED, and SCOTT’S
ORIOLES.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for up
to a year for construction. He says they may be finished by the end of May.

In Doña Ana County:
On May 7 JN found an apparent BUFF-BREASTED FLYCATCHER near Main Street
south to Union east of McCowell in Mesilla Park. Ir was seen by CBr on May 8,
but has not been seen again.
Jpa on May 13 found a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in a bosque near Santa Teresa..
JN had in Mesilla Park on May 4.two female BRONZED COWBIRDS.

In Otero County:
On Mau 7 JD reports two male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS at Oliver Lee SP near
Alamogordo on the lower trail.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs DR reported a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER male on May 7.
JP, BP, and WW on May 8 had a ZONE-TAILED HAWK, the GRAY HAWK, and a possible
adult light phase SHORT-TAILED HAWK with two INDIGO BUNTINGS and male
ROSE-BREASTED GROSEAk. The grosbeak and buntings were still present May 9. RC
found MISSISSIPPI KITE and one of the buntings on May 14. DR found the GRAY
HAWK and a BROAD-WINGED HAWK on May 13 with a male VARIED BUNTING at the
irrigation ditch on May 11 and a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO on May 15.
In Slaughter Canyon CL and CCBr on May 7 saw two GRAY VIREOS and an INDIGO
BUNTING. SW had three gray vireos in the canyon on May 15.
JP and BP had a WILLET at Brantley Lake on May 9.
In Lea County:
RC saw a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER at Harry McAdam Park in Hobbs on May 17.
JP and BP had a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on the Tatum Sewage Ponds on May
10.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call

plans. On May 25 they go to Bandelier NM near Los Alamos led by Marge Williams.
