Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Friday May 19. The roster this week includes sightings
of MISSISSIPPI KITE, DICKCISSEL, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, MAGNIFICENT
FRIGATEBIRD, LEAST BITTERN, CURLEW SANDPIPER, LARK SPARROW, WHITE-
FACED IBIS and BLACK-NECKED STILT (extra limital),.
On Monday 5/15 six WHITE-FACED IBIS were seen from private property
near the Garden State Parkway along with over a hundred GLOSSY IBIS.
There has been no report this week as to whether the WHITE-FACED IBIS
is still being seen from the Beaver Dam area.
There have been two to three MISSISSIPPI KITES in the Cape May area
this week. Two birds were seen today, 5/19 over the beanery as well
as two yesterday, 5/18 over West Cape May.
A DICKCISSEL was seen on 5/16 in a vacant lot at the corner of 123rd
and 3rd streets in Stone Harbor.
Also on 5/16 a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen from Nummy Island. This
bird seems to have been a one day wonder as there have been no
further reports since the initial sighting.
A MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD was seen flying along the Cape May coast
yesterday at various times and locations from the Meadow at 1:00 pm
to St. Mary’s Jetty around 4:00 pm. The bird was last seen
yesterday, 5/18 in the evening and has not been reported today.
A LEAST BITTERN was seen flying across Sunset Blvd. into the Meadows
today, 5/19.
The two CURLEW SANDPIPERS in the Heislerville Impoundments continue
as of about 5:00 pm on 5/18 and at least one seen along with two
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS today, 5/19.
A LARK SPARROW was reported from the Two Mile Beach Unit of the Cape
May NWR today, 5/19.
-Extra Limital Report-
It was reported that the BLACK-NECKED STILT continues to be seen as
of 5/17 at Forsythe/Brigantine NWR
