Feature Birds
---------------------------
HERMIT WARBLER
LAZULI BUNTING
RUDDY TURNSTONE

Sunday, May 21
RARE BIRD ALERT: In the oaks on the east side of Mount Tolmie in Saanich
this morning a HERMIT WARBLER was observed at 9:30, but it was not relocated
later in the day. Also nearby in the morning was a LAZULI BUNTING. Later in
the day a flock of 12 SANDHILL CRANES flew over.
At the Tower Point section of Witty's Lagoon Regional Park in Metchosin was
a RUDDY TURNSTONE.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was observed at the Mount Douglas Golf Course off
Blenkinsop Road north of McKenzie Ave.
2 SANDHILL CRANES continue on the south side of Martindale Road in Central
Saanich.
2 CASPIAN TERNS were at Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood.

Saturday, May 20
A sub-adult GOLDEN EAGLE was over the Institute of Ocean Sciences buildings
off West Saanich Road near the Victoria International Airport.

Friday, May 19
A second-year male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was visiting a feeder near
Wallace and Farmington Roads.
2 SANDHILL CRANES continue in the Martindale Valley. However, there was no
relocation for the Long-billed Curlew that was observed there most of
Thursday.
2 BULLOCK'S ORIOLE were now at the corner of Lochside Drive and Martindale
Road.
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT-OF-TOWN): An EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE has been present at
a feeder at Cape Lazo in Comox. No doubt the origins of such a bird is
always a question-mark and the status of this species in British Columbia
remains unclear. However, there is a small population in Keremeos in the
Okanagan that has been present for a number of years. There was also a
sighting of this species in the Sunshine Coast recently. Since becoming
established in North America starting in Florida in the 1980's, the Eurasian
Collared-Dove has undergone a dramatic and widespread range expansion,
particularly in the south and west.
Coincidentally, another EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was at a feeder in the
Saltair section of Nanaimo.

Thursday, May 18
A LONG-BILLED CURLEW was seen on the south side of Martindale Rd, between
Lochside Dr and Welch Road. 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were frequenting a ditch
nearby. 2 SANDHILL CRANES were observed in the Martindale Valley near the
model airplane field off Lochside Drive, they were later seen in the fields
on the south side of Martindale Rd. Please respect private property.
Nearby, a male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was in the cottonwoods at the corner of
Martindale Rd and Lochside Drive.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was in the 4300 block of Blenkinsop Road near the Valley
Golf Course just north of McKenzie Ave in Saanich.

Wednesday, May 17
5 WHIMBREL and 2 MARBLED GODWITS remained at the 5th tee of the Victoria
Golf Course in Oak Bay.
Different observers have reported a SANDHILL CRANE which has been present
for the last two days in a newly tilled farm field just south of 9865 West
Saanich Road near the Victoria International Airport.
