This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird
Record Committee Review Species sightings to: Guy
McCaskie,Secretary, California Bird Records Committee P. O. Box 275
Imperial Beach, CA 91933-0275 (or by e-mail to
guymcc@pacbell.net). On another note, you can subscribe to Northwestern

receiving messages in your e-mail, of which typically appear within
5 minutes of the message being called in. Messages

Seems like Black-throated Sparrows are staging a mini invasion along the
northcoast with a bird found in Humboldt County this week and the 2 that
were reported last week. Numerous reports of Black Swifts came in from
various areas along the coast and a probable Rose-breasted Grosbeak was
briefly seen and heard in Arcata. A late Ancient Murrelet and Long-tailed
Duck were present in Mendocino County.

15 May

----------
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen and heard on 14th street, between I and J
streets, in Arcata. A probable ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was seen near this
vicinity along with some HOODED ORIOLES (Scott Carey).

16 May
-----------
On the ocean, opposite of Freshwater Lagoon, many observers estimated about
150 MARBLED MURRELETS. The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was present in Arcata at the
same location previously mentioned (David Fix).

17 May
-----------
In MENDOCINO COUNTY an ANCIENT MURRELET was seen off of the Little River
Headlands (found by Owen Head). Also, a male LONG-TAILED DUCK was found at
the mouth of the Ten Mile River (Kerry Ross).

A RUDDY TURNSTONE was with other shorebirds at Hilfiker Lane, in Eureka
(Scott Carey).

18 May
-----------
A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARLBER was singing at the Mad River Fish Hatchery (Scott
Carey).

19 May
-----------
A CALIFORNIA TOWHEE was seen off of Taylor Way, in Blue Lake. At the Mad
River Fish Hatchery 5 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were present. At Klopp Lake,
Arcata Marsh, 1 WHIMBREL and 6 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were seen. The
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was still present at the aformentioned location in
Arcata (Scott Carey).

A BLACK SWIFT and PURPLE MARTIN were seen flying above the town of Bayside.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at the Brancenter bridge, near Capetown, and
was thought to be one of the few places where this species is found with Red
Alders. An adult PEREGRINE FALCON, near Cape Mendocino, was behaving unlike
a migrant (possible breeder?). On the south end of the North Spit was a
migrant OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. "AUDUBON'S" YELLOW-RUMPED WARLBERS are once
again nesting in the cypress grove on the North Spit (David Fix).

20 May
-----------
At Hiller Park, in McKinleyville, 8 BLACK SWIFTS were seen overhead with 5
VAUX'S SWIFTS. Twelve MARBLED MURRELETS and 1 SABINE'S GULL were seen off of
the coast at Hiller Park and 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER and 1 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE
were also present there (Kerry Ross).

On the west end of the V-street Loop, in the Arcata Bottoms, was one GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (Elias Elias).

At Luffenholtz Beach, south of Trinidad, a BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was found
in the parking lot (Chris Collins).

The BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was refound in the aforementioned location later
in the day. Three BLACK SWIFTS were seen over Azalea Hill, in McKinleyville
(Gary Lester).
21May
-----------
Of local interest was a WESTERN MEADOWLARK singing at Fay Slough Wildlife
Area (Elias Elias).

The BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was seen again at the Luffenholtz Beach parking
lot (Scott Carey).

A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was seen on the Mad River 3/4 of a mile downriver from
the bridge at Blue Lake (Keith Slauson).
