This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for May 25, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Black Rails,
Gray Hawks, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, and Clark's Nutcrackers.
Some areas have increased fire restrictions due to the drought.

In Sandoval County:
BH on May 13 at Cochiti Lake again saw the BLACK HAWK soaring over below the
spillway.
On May 12 KH reported two pairs of RED CROSSBILLS and a CLARK’S NUTCRACKER
on a dirt road south of NM 4 east of the Redondo Campground in the Jemez Mts.
west of Los Alamos.

In Los Alamos County:
AS saw a ZONE-TAILED HAWK over Bayo Canyon in Los Alamos on May 21.

In Santa Fe County:
LH had a second hand report of a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER along the stream
in Galisteo on May 22.
JW reported BURROWING OWLS have been seen on the runways of the Santa Fe
Airport.

In San Miguel County:
RV had a WOOD THRUSH at the golf couse pond at Conchas Lake on May 13 with a
BELL’S VIREO. JP recorded the thrush and vireo May 13. BW saw the singing
vireo on May 22.
BW on May 22 saw two PAINTED BUNTINGS on the south side of the Hudson Canal
and a MISSISSIPPI KITE at the ACDE headquarters in the Conchas Lake area.
At the adjacent Clabber Hill Ranch on May 12 RV recorded two calling BLACK
RAILS. They were calling for JNM, JP and BP on May 14 and BW on May 22. The
ranch is private; for permission to bird call Tony Gabel at 868-3351.
BW on May 23 on Corazon Hill on NM 104 between mile markers 34 and 35 found
two SCOTT’S ORIOLES and a singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW with four HEPATIC
TANAGERS near the hill’s top. Near mile marker 5 east of Las Vegas there were
two BURROWING OWLS.

In Colfax County:
DC and EWi on May 10 had an adult male KENTUCKY WARBLER in Angel Fire at a
beaver pond on El Vado Way on the north side of the road. It was seen again
on May 15.
DC at Stubblefield Lake on May 16 saw two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. On May
22 there was a pair of HUDSONIAN GOWITS along the south shoreline.
At Springer Lake on May 19 DC recorded 19 Stilt Sandpipers, eight
White-rumped Sandpipers, 33 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, two DUNLINS, and 18 BLACK
TERNS.
On May 23 at the lake there was a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, BLACK-NECKED STILT,
and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.

In Quay County:
CR in Tucumcari on May 6 at the corner of Rock Island and Maple saw nine
MISSISSIPPI KITES and an ORCHARD ORIOLE. At Pajarito Creek there were a
CARDINAL and an EASTERN PHOEBE.

In Cibola County:
CJG on May 19 at the Malpais Narrows between the Ventana Arch and the
Narrows picnic area saw several BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS and three HEPATIC TANAGERS
with a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER south of the Narrows.
In Grants a male INDIGO BUNTING was in the park on Mesa Blvd.

In Bernalillo County:
BN on May 24 on the UNM campus had a singing NORTHERN PARULA in the trees
near the Duck Pond.
JP and HS on May 21 had a singing RED-EYED VIEEO in the nature area behind
the San Antonio de Padua Church near Cedar Crest. At the ponds at 4th and
Tramway there were two MISSISSIPPI KITES.
JJ heard one WHIP-POOR-WILL at the Doc Long Picnic Area in the eastern
Sandia Mts. on May 6 with a FLAMMULATED OWL heard between the two main parking
areas.
JJ had two BURROWING OWLS south of the Costco on Eubank Street on May 7.

In Guadalupe County:
BW on May 21 in Santa Rosa saw two MISSISSIPPI KITES over the Pecos River at
the west end of Baca Street with at about five miles south of town along the
river there were a RED-EYED VIREO, INDIGO BUNTING, two RED-HEADED
WOOPECKERS, and two YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS.

In DeBaca County:
At a pond at Billy the Kid’s Grave south of Fort Sumner JP had a calling
LEAST BITTERN on May 12.

In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap west of Melrose JP and BP saw a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO
and a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on May 13. MH, JB, and BW ON May 15 found
the vireo and the grosbeak. Also sighted were BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER,
BOBOLINK, and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. LG and CD on May 17 found a RED-EYED
VIREO, four SWAINSON’S THRUSHES, a WORM-EATING WARBLER, the female grosbeak, a
SWAMP SPARROW, and a female ORCHARD ORIOLE. WW on May 18 had only a RED-EYED
VIREO and a singing immature AMERICAN REDSTART. RV, MH, and JB on May 23 had
a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, two redatarts, a NORTHERN PARULA, and a YELLOW-BILLED
CUCKOO at the trap. On May 24 GF reported a male BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER in the
trees near the water tank.
A GLOSSY IBIS was on the Portales Sewage Pond s on May 11 by JP and BP.

In Curry County:
JP and BP at the Clovis Sewage Ponds on May 11 had a GLOSSY IBIS. WW had a
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER on the ponds on May 18.
At Ned Houk Park north of Clovis on May 10 JP had three BRONZED COWBIRDS.
WW on May 18 found a CATBIRD there.

In Socorro County:
DH on May 13 had a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER on the road between I-25 and
exit 163 at San Acacia.
On May 13 JO found a GRAY HAWK in the bosque south of San Marcial 3.1 miles
south of the access road bridge.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on May 10 GF found a SNOW GOOSE
and INDIGO BUNTING. CL and CCBr had four Snow Geese on May 20.
GF at Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro on May 10 saw a a female
SCARLET TANAGER and a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, with a pair of BRONZED
COWBIRDS on the 9th tee of the golf course. CL and CCBr had two INDIGO BUNTINGS
on May 20, LG and CD saw a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE present on May 22 with a
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER.
At his home in Luis Lopez south of Socorro JO on May 22 saw an immature male
SCARLET TANAGER and on May 24 a female BRONZED COWBIRD.
In Water Canyon west of Socorro SM reports that the campground is closed and
will be moved to a new site. A trail is to be built for birding.

In Catron County:
RC had a DIPPER at the Whitewater Canyon Catwalk near Glenwood on May 13.

In Chaves County:
GW on Bitter Lake Refuge on May 24 recorded an immature YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON along the ditch of Units 6 and 7.
On the refuge JO saw the adult WHITE IBIS on May 10. GW found a
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on Unit 3 and heard the LEAST BITTERN on Units 15 or 16. JO
had the
goose and bittern on May 10. CL and CCBr on May 14 found at the Oxbow on
the refuge up to 40 MISSISSIPPI KITES. On the refuge on May 17 GW had a
singing male BOBOLINK on Unit 5, a closed area. If one asks at the office for
permission to see it from 7:30 to 5 weekdays, permission will be granted.

In Sierra County:
CL and CCBr on May 20 found a PEREGRINE FALCON at Percha Dam State Park.

In Grant County:
RC had calling WHIP-POOR-WILLS, FLAMMULATED and SPOTTED OWLS in the Pinos
Altos Mts. north of Silver City on MAY 13. He had a BENDIRE’S THRASHER along
the Gila Rio at Redrock.
In Silver City DMZ had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK
in their yard through May 13.
At the Gila River Farm near Cliff MF had a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on May 13.
JDM at her home at Roberts Lake had a MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD May 15.

In Hidalgo County:
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
On May 12 CL had a CATBIRD and an INDIGO BUNTING in the Mountain View
Cemetery in Deming.
He had another Indigo Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus on May 14.
LM in his Deming yard in mid-May had a GRAY VIREO.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for up
to a year for construction. He says they may be finished by the end of May.

In Dona Ana County:
CL and CBr had a SNOWY PLOVER along the Rio Grande about a mile north of the
Mesilla Dam on May 24.
JPa on May 13 found a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in a bosque near Santa Teresa.
CL on May 21 on the Pine Tree Trail in Aguirre Springs State Park on the
east side of the Organ Mts. found two GRAY VIREOS and a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs RC found a MISSISSIPPI KITE and an INDIGO BUNTING on
May 14. DR found the GRAY HAWK on May 13 with a male VARIED BUNTING at the
irrigation ditch on May 11 and a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO on May 15, while BE saw
a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on May 18. SW and RiW on May 23 recorded a
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, CATBIRD, and BLACK-AND=WHITE WARBLER.
In Slaughter Canyon CL and CCBr on May 7 saw two GRAY VIREOS and an INDIGO
BUNTING. SWh had three gray vireos in the canyon on May 15.
SW on May 24 had five CATTLE EGRETS at Six-Mile Dam near Otis.
At his Carlsbad home on Mauy 24 SW had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK hit his
window and banded a CATBIRD.

In Lea County:
PMc had up to six MISSISSIPPI KITES soaring over Eunice on May 18.
RC saw a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER at Harry McAdam Park in Hobbs on May 17.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On June 1 the trip is to the Doc Long Picnic area and Bill Springs
Trail (if not closed) led by Mary Lou Arthur; on June 8 to Otero Canyon with
Melissa Howard, June 13 to the Sandia Peak Ski Area with Lannois Neely, and on
June 22 to Isleta Marsh and the Los Lunas River Park with Bev Silfer.

The weekend of June 2-3 is the Water Canyon Bird Count. Contacts are Andrew
