You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Friday May 26. The roster this week includes sightings
of MISSISSIPPI KITE, SWAINSON’S WARBLER, GRAY KINGBIRD, BLACK-NECKED
STILT, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER and ROSEATE TERN.
There still was good birding in the Cape May area this week. Numbers
of warbler and other migrant reports are trickling into the
Observatory though there have been no great concentrations of
migrants at any one location. The best bet is to try and hit as many
birding localities as possible to ensure that you have the best
chance of seeing the greatest variety of species.
MISSISSIPPI KITE is still being seen in Cape May this week. The most
recent report of this species was from Batts Ln. on 5/25.
A SWAINSON’S WARBLER was heard singing in the woods across from the
CMBO Northwood Center property on Lighthouse Ave. on the morning of
5/24. This bird has not been reported since its initial discovery.
A GRAY KINGBIRD was reported on the morning of 5/20 but was not
relocated until the late afternoon of 5/21. The bird was seen from
phone wires along Sunset Ave in Cape May. The bird flew off in a
northeasterly direction and has not been reported since.
ROSEATE TERN seems to be still hanging around Cape May this week.
There have been various reports through the week, the most recent
being one tern seen at Bunker Pond yesterday, 5/25.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen from Higbee’s Beach on 5/21.
Lastly, two BLACK-NECKED STILTS were reported from Brigantine on the
afternoon of 5/20. The birds were seen in the first tenth of a mile
on the left side of the dike. There has been no word of these birds
since the initial sighting report.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point is open 7 days a week 9-4:30. The Center for
Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week,
9-4:30. BOTH Centers will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance
of Memorial Day.
