Two EASTERN PHOEBES were reported this past week, one in Idaho and another
in Washington. IDAHO: On 28 May Georgene and Robert Bond found a calling
bird in Bonner Co ID. This bird has been seen regularly since, including
today (31 May) when I observed it at about 1 pm. To get there from Priest
River, take ID 57 north from US 2 for about 3.5 miles. Turn right onto
Peninsula Road and follow it about 11 miles to the bridge over the Middle
Fork of the East River. The bird loves to call from the low-hanging power
line on the west side of the bridge. Some birders have had to wait nearly 40
minutes for it to appear. ID DeLorme 62, B-1. WASHINGTON: On 30 May Charlie
Wright found one at Lyon's Ferry Park. Lyons Ferry Park is in the southeast
corner of Franklin Co., WA. This park is right in the corner of Franklin,
Whitman, Columbia and Walla Walla counties. Access via WA 261. WA DeLorme
55, D-6.5.
LEAST FLYCATCHERS popped up in several locations in both states. WASHINGTON:
On 22 May Michael Woodruff had one in Spangle, Spokane Co WA at the Upper
Columbia Academy. On 31 May, Mike and MerryLynn Denny found one at
Bennington Lake just east of Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co WA. It was on the
southeast side of the lake, across the dam and up the new trail. Take US 12
east through most of Walla Walla until the airport / Bennington Lake exit.
Take the exit and turn right (south) toward Walla Walla Community College.
At the 4-way blinking red light, continue south on what is now Tausik Way
and cross over Mill Creek. Take the first turn left (east) and follow the
signs to the lake. WA DeLorme 41, D-6.5
IDAHO LEAST FLYCATCHERS: On 21 May, Doug Ward found one at Skyway Elementary
School in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID. To get there, from I-90 at the
Northwest Blvd exit, head north on Ramsey to Hanley, left off Hanley to
Courcelles Parkway, then right at the round-a-bout. The bird was in the
woods behind the soccer fields. It was still there on 23 May according to
Lisa Hardy. On 25 May, Chris Caudill, Ashely Martens, and Will Boyd found a
calling bird at Phillip's Farm County Park just north of Moscow, Latah Co
ID. The bird was in the westernmost corner in a mixed stand of aspen and
ponderosa pine. I saw the bird on the 26th. Head north from Moscow, up the
grade over Moscow Mountain, and then a left turn into the park.
A very late adult SNOWY OWL was sitting just inside the Oregon border on the
south side of Stateline Road just south of the famous Short Road west of WA
125 between College Place and Milton-Freewater on 23 May according to Mike
and MerryLynn Denny.
BLACK-THROATED SPARROWS are popping up in WA. Randy Hill found "several" in
a very isolated area of the Columbia NWR. An accessible bird was found 28
May by Terry Gray and others at Steptoe Butte State Park in Whitman Co WA.
The bird was at the rock quarry near the microwave building about a quarter
of the way up the butte. It was relocated on the 29th by Roger Woodruff and
the 30th by Gina Sheridan. ID DeLorme 73, D-6.
On 28 May, Patrick and Ruth Sullivan found a BALTIMORE ORIOLE at Wanapum
State Park (accessed south of Vantage along Huntzinger Road) in Kittitas Co
WA. Wanapum State Park is on the west side of the river. WA DeLorme 52, A-1.
A single WHITE-FACED IBIS was at Canyon Marsh west of Cataldo, Kootenai Co
ID on 23 May according to Lisa Hardy. The bird was in the flooded fields
along River Road. To get there, take I-90 exit 34 (Rose Lake), turn north to
the T intersection and turn right onto Canyon Road. Go 1.9 miles, turn right
onto River Road. After crossing the interstate, turn right (downhill) onto
graveled River Road. River Road runs south along the edge of the flooded
fields that are west of Tamarack Ridge. ID DeLorme 60, B-3.
A single EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen 27 May in the 400 block of Pine
Street, Othello, Adams Co WA.
Good birding.
