Thursday, September 1, 2005, with reports of KING EIDER, AMERICAN
WHITE PELICAN, AMERICAN BITTERN, LEAST BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, COMMON
MOORHEN, AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPER,
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, BUFF-
BREASTED SANDPIPER, GULL-BILLED TERN, CASPIAN TERN, BLACK TERN, GREEN
VIOLET-EAR, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER,
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, HORNED LARK, MOURNING WARBLER, BLUE GROSBEAK,
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, a notice of an upcoming pelagic trip, and
seasonal and local reports of interest.
The state's first GREEN VIOLET-EAR hummingbird was discovered late
August 23 at a feeder in Rumson; it was seen again the next morning
from 6:15 to 6:50 a.m., then disappeared never to be seen again.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was observed nearby August 24.
The salt pond at the Fisherman's Beach at Sandy Hook continues to be
productive with five BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER,
several WESTERN SANDPIPERS and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER as well as a
VIRGINIA RAIL Aug. 28. Two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were still present
Sept. 1. Other birds noted at Sandy Hook include CASPIAN TERNS, BLACK
TERNS, and LEAST BITTERN Aug. 26, KING EIDER Aug. 27 and YELLOW-
BELLIED FLYCATCHER Aug. 26 and Sept. 1.
The Johnson Sod Farm south of Pole Tavern featured as many as 17
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, nine BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, seven UPLAND
SANDPIPERS and two HORNED LARKS Aug. 27 to 29. The nearby Delea Sod
Farm on Rt. 40 featured Aug. 27 six BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, six AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVERS, four BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, three WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS and 28 WESTERN SANDPIPERS.
Forsythe (Brigantine) National Wildlife Refuge was home to the
continuing AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, seven BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, a
GULL-BILLED TERN, and a BLUE GROSBEAK Aug. 29, as well as a YELLOW-
HEADED BLACKBIRD August 29-30, and a CASPIAN TERN Aug. 24. A female
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was also recorded at Sandy Hook near the
water treatment building Aug. 26.
A MOURNING WARBLER and LEAST BITTERN Aug. 25, and an AMERICAN BITTERN
Aug. 27, were noted at Palmyra. Collier's Mills WMA hosted a BLUE
GROSBEAK Aug. 25.
Six STILT SANDPIPERS and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were tallied at Spruce
Run Reservoir Aug. 28, with the Baird's increasing to two Aug. 31, as
well as Hunterdon County's first-ever WILLET. An AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER was also noted at Spruce Run Aug. 27. The Clinton WMA hosted a
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, and the Paulinskill WMA an OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, Aug. 26
Great Meadows in Hope Aug. 28-29 featured as many as nine AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVERS, two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER.
The Celery Farm in Allendale was home to its first COMMON MOORHEN in
many years Aug. 31. AMERICAN BITTERN and LEAST BITTERN were present
along the Hackensack River in Secaucus Aug. 30.
Worth noting were 2100 to 2300 hundred BLACK SKIMMERS present at
Hereford Inlet Aug. 29.
An overnight pelagic trip to Hudson Canyon out of Barnegat Light is
