Feature Birds
---------------------------
LARK BUNTING
Friday, June 2
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT of TOWN): A male LARK BUNTING is visiting feeders on
Seaview Drive at Miracle Beach (this is about 20 kms north of Courtenay).
The bird is in the back yard facing the beach. This would only be the fourth
record for Vancouver Island. More specific location details are being sought
and will be posted later.
Thursday, June 1
A late GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was along Deer Park Trail in Metchosin.
Wednesday, May 31
RARE BIRD ALERT: On James Island, PELICANS were reported this morning on the
spit at the north end of the island, possibly either AMERICAN WHITE or BROWN
PELICANS. The birds then flew off, but are likely still in the general area.
It is suggested birders check anywhere along the waterfront, perhaps in
particular from Island View Beach Regional Park or along Lochside Drive just
south of Sidney.
A GREEN HERON was on the east side of the bridge at Blenkinsop Lake in
Saanich.
Tuesday, May 30
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT of TOWN): In Jordan River, a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was
observed near the Western Forest Products parking area, and also nearby was
a singing male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE. There was no report today for the
DICKCISSEL, but it is likely still in the area and the homeowner has been
notified of this bird's significance.
RED-EYED VIREOS have returned to their usual spot along Cowichan Bay Road
south of Duncan. A single bird was heard singing there today.
A male LAZULI BUNTING continued on Mount Tolmie in Saanich.
7 CASPIAN TERNS were at Gordon's Beach west of Sooke.
Monday, May 29
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen over the Victoria International Airport.
Sunday, May 28
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT of TOWN): A male DICKCISSEL continued at a feeder in
Jordan River at 104 Hilltop Road. To find the property, less than 1km
northeast of Jordan River off the West Coast Road/Highway 14 note Forebay
Road followed shortly by two more roads on your right, the second of which
leads to several camp-style homes. Park at the edge of the field in the
middle and look for the last house on the right with many bird feeders which
are visible through the fence. Please be respectful of private property.
A DUSKY FLYCATCHER was banded at the Rocky Point Bird Observatory in
Metchosin. A reminder that access is restricted here as it is located on
military property.
There was no relocation today of a possible YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
reported Saturday near Prospect Lake.
A possible PRAIRIE FALCON was seen over the Ardmore area of North Saanich.
