This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

Highlights from this past week were Laysan Albatross, Indigo Bunting and the
first Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the season. Also of interest was a report of
a Hermit x Townsend's Warbler in Redway and the continuing Lawrence's
Goldfinch in Fieldbrook. Possibly most interesting, though, was an early
report of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Cock Robin Island, an area where they
have been detected in the past.......
Belated reports:
On the 28th of May a WILSON'S SNIPE was at the Airport Willows on the North
Spit. Inland on Titlow Hill Road GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES and 1 flyover
WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER were the highlights (Scott Carey).
Also on the 28th a LAYSAN ALBATROSS was seen 4.5 miles off the coast, near
Eureka, with other albatrosses (Paul Roush).

A male INDIGO BUNTING was found on the eastern side of Shay Park, in Arcata.
On Bald Hills Road, in Redwood National Park, a WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen 14
miles in on the road; a YELLOW WARBLER seemed out of place in oaks nearby
(Scott Carey).
At the Arcata Marsh, on the east side of the Log Pond, an ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and BULLOCK'S ORIOLE were seen (John
Felsig [spelling?]).
In southern Humboldt County, at the Omarra Redwood Grove in the town of
Redway, a HERMIT X TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was observed (David Gurley).
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was banded by the Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory
at Lanphere Dunes (Kim Hollinger).

A male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK came to a feeder at 712 8th Avenue, Westhaven
(Tim Mckay).
2 June

Another ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was banded at Lanphere Dunes (Kim
Hollinger).
A BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS was seen 2 kilometers off of Shelter Cove. The
first adult HEERMAN'S GULL of the season was observed at Point Delgado at
Shelter Cove. A brown male HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen there along with 1 flyby
PARASITIC JAEGER, 1 winter-plumged MARBLED MURRELET, and 7 CASSIN'S AUKLETS.
Also of interest were 5 EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES seen at Mario's Hotel in
Shelter Cove (Elias Elias).
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was heard and seen well at Cock Robin Island in the
Loleta Bottoms. It was seen in the riparian habitat just south of the bridge
(Joe Sariani [spelling?]).

In Fieldbrook the male LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH was still present at 3628
Fieldbrook Road (Gary Lester).
The YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO at Cock Robin Island was refound and was reported
to be very conspicuous by the observers. The bird was seen and heard (soft
coo...coo....coo calls) in the riparian habitat on the south side of the
bridge and was also seen on the opposite side of the river (Sean
McAllister).
