Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline
covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, June 8, 2006.
ADAMS COUNTY:
Birds seen at Long Pine Reservoir on June 4 included COMMON LOON, BLACK-THROATED
BLUE WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER (MW).
CAMBRIA COUNTY:
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were nesting in the same location as was found last year as
of June 1 (but location was unspecified in the message) (TR).
CENTRE COUNTY:
A colony of around 50 CLIFF SWALLOWS was found on June 3 under the bridge of the
closed portion of I-99 just north of Port Matilda (NK).
A GREAT EGRET and 1 SORA were found at Julian Wetlands on June 4 (NK).
The Mingoville 6 atlas block yielded CANADA GEESE, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 HOODED
WARBLER and some COMMON GRACKLES on June 4 (MH).
Birds found in Bald Eagle State Forest on June 4 included RUFFED GROUSE, an
unidentified buteo, MOURNING DOVE, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN
FLICKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, BLUE JAY, HERMIT THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH,
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,
AMERICAN REDSTART, OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, HOODED WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER,
SCARLET TANAGER, EASTERN TOWHEE and DARK-EYED JUNCO (HB).
CLEARFIELD COUNTY:
Birds found around reclaimed strip mine land near Houtzdale on June 4 included 2
GREEN HERONS, 10 KILLDEER, 40 PRAIRIE WARBLES, PINE WARBLERS, HORNED LARKS, VESPER
SPARROWS, 50 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, 5 HENSLOW’S SPARROW, BOBOLINKS and EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS (AW).
CLINTON COUNTY:
Birds found close to Kettle Creek prior to June 1 included CUCKOOS, NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL, COMMON RAVENS, WINTER WREN, VEERY, SWAINSON’S THRUSH, HERMIT THRUSH,
WOOD THRUSH, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, MAGNOLIA
WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (TR).
COLUMBIA COUNTY:
Four WHIP-POOR-WILLS were calling along Rod and Gun Club Road north of Millville on
May 31 (DG).
A GREAT HORNED OWL, 1 BARRED OWL and a couple of BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS were found
near Central Village on June 1 (DG).
An ALDER FLYCATCHER and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER were found in adjacent territories in
Greenwood Township on June 1 (DG).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
A NORTHERN BOBWHITE was heard calling and some HORNED LARKS were displaying along
Nealy Road just west of Newville on June 3 (VG).
A CERULEAN WARBLER and 1 KENTUCKY WARBLER were found in Michaux State Forest and
Camp Michaux on June 6 (MW).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A small flock of at least 6 PINE SISKINS visited feeders between Spruce and Seventh
Streets in Steelton on June 4 (DM).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
Birds found around Van Wert, Oakland Mills and Mountain Road on June 1 included
CANADA GOOSE, WOOD DUCK, MALLARD, GREAT BLUE HERON, GREEN HERON, BLACK VULTURE,
TURKEY VULTURE, COOPER’S HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, ROCK PIGEON,
MOURNING DOVE, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, BARN OWL, EASTERN SCREECH
OWL, BARRED OWL, CHIMNEY SWIFTS, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER,
DOWNY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, ACADIAN
FLYCATCHER, EASTERN PHOEBE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO,
RED-EYED VIREO, BLUE JAY, AMERICAN CROW, PURPLE MARTIN, TREE SWALLOW, NORTHERN

Birds seen at the Middle Creek Wildlife Propagation Area on May 31 included CANADA

RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, KILLDEER, MOURNING DOVE,

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen along Long Lane in Brecknock Township on June 1 (AH).
Birds found at Conejohela Flats on June 5 and 6 included 1 MUTE SWAN, 3 GREAT
EGRETS, 2 CATTLE EGRETS, 11 BALD EAGLES, 1 COOPER’S HAWK, 48 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 7
KILLDEER, 9 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 82 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 11 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, 3 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS, 1 SCARLET TANAGER
and 1 BLUE GROSBEAK (BS, DH).
An outing on June 7 to Landis Woods recorded MALLARD, GREEN HERON, RED-TAILED HAWK,
KILLDEER, ROCK PIGEON, MOURNING DOVE, CHIMNEY SWIFT, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD,
BELTED KINGFISHER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER,
EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED VIREO, BLUE JAY, AMERICAN
CROW, TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, CAROLINA CHICKADEE, TUFTED TITMOUSE,
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CAROLINA WREN, HOUSE WREN, WOOD THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN,
GRAY CATBIRD, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, EUROPEAN STARLING, YELLOW
WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SCARLET TANAGER, EASTERN TOWHEE, CHIPPING SPARROW,

LYCOMING COUNTY:
An owl survey conducted on the evening of June 5 near Collomsville found 1 BARN OWL
(JS).
POTTER COUNTY:
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was found in the Hammersley Wild Area prior to June 1 (TR).
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
Birds seen around the Flavell property on June 7 included CANADA GEESE, 3 WOOD
DUCKS, 3 MALLARDS, 2 MERGANSERS sp., 12 MOURNING DOVES, AMERICAN CROWS, TREE
SWALLOWS, AMERICAN ROBINS, EUROPEAN STARLINGS, 6 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 2 ORIOLES sp. and 2
AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES (HF).
