A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen south of Nanton on the evening of Monday,
June 5. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk; Terry saw a bird in the
same area on May 20. To reach the site where Terry saw the bird, take
the first southbound road at the north end of Nanton; follow it through
town, then proceed southward past Hwy 533 approx 2 km. The bird was
hunting over a deep coulee with a slough at the bottom to the east.

Also on Monday, June 5, Terry Korolyk observed a late-migrating SWAN
just east of Calgary. The unidentified bird was at a large slough on
the east side of RgeRd 283, just north of Glenmore Trail. Also on June
5, Terry observed a male COMMON GRACKLE at an unusual location; it was
at a slough in the NE corner of the RgeRd 284 & Glenmore Tr
intersection. On Tuesday, June 6, Terry heard a male HOUSE FINCH
singing along Millrise Blvd between James Mackevitt Rd and Shawnessy Blvd.

LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES are probably back on territory in the Irricana
sloughs. Phil Cram, Brian Elder and Milt Spitzer reported a bird was
approx 5 km east of RgeRd 254 on TwpRd 270 on Monday, June 5. Also on
Monday, June 5, they reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was northwest of Water
Valley. They located a PURPLE FINCH at Winchell Lake Estates, a few km
south of Water Valley; and they saw a BOBOLINK on TwpRd 280 just east of
the Grand Valley Rd; and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER at Bow Valley PP.

Don Wesleman (sp?) observed a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON east of High
River early in the week. The bird was on the north side of Hwy 23
approx halfway between Hwy 2 and Frank Lake.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, June 12.
