This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for June 8, 2006,

Finally got rain in Albuquerque!!!
Some areas have increased fire restrictions due to the drought.

In Santa Fe County:
CR on June 4 at the abandoned town of White Lakes south of Santa Fe found
CASSIN’S SPARROWS. At the Santa Fe Ski Basin he saw a PINE GROSBEAK and a
GOSHAWK.
MR and DE on June 3 along the Santa Fe Rio had a SCOTT’S ORIOLE, four BLACK
PHOEBES, and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON.

In San Miguel County:
At the Clabber Hill Ranch adjacent to Conchas Lake one or two calling BLACK
RAILS have been found. One was calling for LC and LL on June 3. JP also
heard a LEAST BITTERN May 28 on the “Ammodramus” Pond. The ranch is private;
for permission to bird call Tony Gabel at 868-3351.
CR from Pecos to the top of Rowe Mesa on June 4 had six HEPATIC TANAGERS,
two CASSIN’S SPARROWS singing on the mesa with a LONG-EARED OWL in Rowe.
EC on June 3 reported a singing RED-FACED WARBLER in the valley north of
Pecos near mile marker 13 on the west hillside.
BW on May 23 near mile marker 5 east of Las Vegas saw two BURROWING OWLS.

In Colfax County:
On Stubblefield Lake on June 1 there was a GLOSSY IBIS, seen again on June 5
and 7 near the inflow channel. . On June 5 there was 52 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS with 20 on June 5 and 20 on June 7. . The lake level is dropping fast.
At Springer Lake DC had on June 2 41 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, three FRANKLIN’
S GULLS, and eight BLACK TERNS.
At Eagle Nest Lake on June 7 he had 16 CALIFORNIA GULLS, about 60 TREE
SWALLOWS, and 80 COMMON MERGANSERS (“mostly guys”).
Near Black Lake south of Angel Fire on June 5 and 7 there was a late SNOW
GOOSE on NM 434 at mile marker 25. On NM 120 (to Ocate) off of 434 there were
several displaying WILSON’S SNIPES at mile post 1.

In Quay County:
DC at Ute Lake State Park on May 25 saw four ORCHARD ORIOLES at various
sites

In McKinley County:
JP and WW on June 3 had 75 to 100 PINYON JAYS from Thoreau to Bluewater Lake.
They found Black Rock Lake at Zuni Pueblo nearly dry. At Vanderwagen south
of Gallup there were four PURPLE MARTINS along the highway on June 3.

In Cibola County:
JP and WW on June 3 had a singing male INDIGO BUNTING at Ramah Lake.
CJG on May 28 reported in the Zuni Mts. PURPLE MARTINS on Forest Road 50
below the Oso Ridge Tower. Some roads in the range have been closed; and areas
in the Malpais Natl. Park are alao restricted. The road up Bluewater Canyon
is closed.

In Bernalillo County:
JJ had a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER drumming on Sandia Crest east of
Albuquerque at the east side of the Kiwanis Meadow on June 3.
On June 4 on the Rio Grande Valley State Park on the west side of the rio
south of Rio Brave at mile post 6 ¾ he had a singing male INDIGO BUNTING.
A late third-hand report via GG to CR told of a singing male PRAIRIE WARBLER
on June 2 in the Tingley Beach area of Albuquerque. There have been no
further sightings.
CW on May 29 saw several BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS at the Embudito Trail on the
western Sandia Mts.
KB since May 9 to 29 has been intermittently seeing one or two ACORN
WOODPECKERS at her home off NM 338 south of Tijeras in the Manzanita Mts. Contact

At the ponds at 4th and Tramway there were two MISSISSIPPI KITES for BV on
May 27 when he christened the area the Tramway Wetlands. JSt saw the kites on
May 29 and MW found them on May 30 in the woods north of the ponds. LC
reported them on June 4.
JJ heard one WHIP-POOR-WILL at the Doc Long Picnic Area in the eastern
Sandia Mts. with a FLAMMULATED OWL heard between the two main parking areas.

In Valencia County:
MW on May 31 saw a flying MISSISSIPPI KITE over the northern esit ramp from
I-25 into Belen.

In Socorro County:
SSA reported a CATBIRD on Bosque del Apache refuge near San Antonio on June
3 at the start of the Marsh Loop. BW on June 5 had a LEAST BITTERN just
north of the east end of the boardwalk.
SSA on June 3 also had an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on a pole just outside
of San Antonio.
In Water Canyon west of Socorro SM reports that the campground is closed and
will be moved to a new site.

In Chaves County:
GW on Bitter Lake Refuge heard the LEAST BITTERN on Units 15 or 16.

In Catron Coounty:
JH on June 5 had a female MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD at her feeders on the
ranch east of Datil.

In Sierra County:
BW on June 5 in Truth or Consequences on Riverside Drive had three BRONZED
COWBIRDS. At South Monticello Point of Elephant Butte Lake there was an ‘
impressive’ breeding colony of WESTERN and CLARK’S GREBES.
At Animas Canyon near Caballo Lake he found an immature male AMERICAN
REDSTART on the Ladder Ranch with three pairs of BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS.

In Sierra/Grant Counties:
OLIVE WARBLERS habe feen found on Emory Pass in the Black Range by CL on
June 4, PS on June 1, and CCBr on June 3. CL hiked five miles on the ridge
towards Hillsboro Peak and found CLARK’S NUTCRACKER, GOSHAWK, and WILLIAMSON’S
SAPSUCKER.

In Grant County:
PS on June 2 and CCBr on June 3 had calling FLAMMULATED OWLs and
WHIPPOORWILLS in the Pinos Altos Mts. north of Silver City at the McMillan
Campground.
PS also heard a SPOTTED OWL.
CCBR on June 3 on NM 35 south of Lake Roberts at mile marker 5 had a BLACK
HAWK perched over the Mimbres River.

In Hidalgo County:
RV and MH reported two BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHERS in Guadalupe Canyon near
the orchard on June 4. JP and JO found them only on the Arizona side about 1.5
to two miles west near the fifth stream crossing with a GILA MONSTER. (okay
so I like reptiles). At the NM side orchard there was a VARIED BUNTING male
with a GRAY VIREO on the hillside. A GRAY HAWK was on the Arizona side of
the state line and four COMMON GROUND-DOVES were near the entrance gate. The
gnatcatchers were not found by MB on June 6.
MT on June 5 had an adult WHITE-TAILED KITE along US 80 about five miles
south of Rodeo.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for up
to a year for construction.

In Dona Ana County:
JZ and MS at their home in Radium Springs have had a GREEN HERON at their
pond through June 4. Also seen there have been on June 2 late PINE SISKINGS
and a fly-by LITTLE BLUE HERON with a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on June 4.
DG at his Las Cruces home again briefly saw the COMMON GROUND-DOVE on June 1.
CCBr on the Pine Tree Trail in Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts.
on May 28-29 saw two ACORN WOODPECKERS with HUTTON’S VIREOS present. A
ZONE-TAILED HAWK flew above Texas Canyon and off over Sugarloaf Peak.

In Otero County:
DG on Otero Mesa at a well on May 30-31 saw CASSIN’S SPARROW
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
SW at Brantley Lake on June 3 photographed an adult LAUGHING GULL with a
MISSISSIPPI KITE in Artesia. Near Lakewood there was a SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER and a BELL’S VIREO.
With TH on June 2 there was a GRAY VIREO at Lowe Spring in Walnut Canyon of
the Carlsbad Caverns.
RN on June 4 at Bataan Lake in Carlsbad had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.
At Rattlesnake Springs On May 29 SW saw the GRAY HAWK near the abandoned
stock tank, a few INDIGO BUNTINGS and an eastern female BRONZED COWBIRD.
In Slaughter Canyon SWh had three gray vireos on May 15.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On June 13 the trip is to the Sandia Peak Ski Area with Lannois Neely,
and on June 22 to Isleta Marsh and the Los Lunas River Park with Bev Silfer.

On Sunday, June 11, Sangre de Cristo will explore the Pecos area. Leaders
are Gary and Karen Schiltz at 757-2212.

On Saturday, June 17, Sangre will bird the Orilla Verde Park near Pilar.
