You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Sunday June 11. The roster this week includes sightings
of ROSEATE TERN, SOOTY SHEARWATER, WILSON’S STORM-PETREL, LEAST
BITTERN, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, PARASITIC JAEGER and WHITE-FACED
IBIS.
There have been numerous reports of both SOOTY SHEARWATERS and
WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS from Cape May Point this week. There has been
upwards of as many as 20+ WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS and 5+ SOOTY
SHEARWATERS seen from St. Mary’s jetty on 6/7 and 6/6 respectively.
Both of these species have been seen almost daily in the last week.
Also on 6/6, from St. Mary’s jetty were two PARASITIC JAEGERS.
At the Meadows on 6/6, a LEAST BITTERN was seen flying around in the
vicinity of the middle of the western trail.
On 6/7 a ROSEATE TERN was seen at St. Peter’s jetty.
The LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continues to be seen this week and was
reported again from the Cape May Point State Park on 6/5.
Lastly, three WHITE-FACED IBIS were reported from Beaver Swamp WMA on
6/4. There have been no additional reports for this species in the
week.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point is open 7 days a week 9-4:30. The Center for
Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week,
9-4:30.
