This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for June 11, 2006,

In Rio Arriba County:
JP recorded two VEERIES in the evening of June 9 in Chama south of the
Elkhorn Café, one on each side of the river.
At Stone Lake on the Jicarilla Apache IR south of Dulce on June 10 he found
two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Eared and Western Grebes are nesting. Burford
(aka Stinking) Lake is dry.
In Taos County:
JP and WW on June 9 found a male CAPE MAY WARBLER on NM 518 about 4.5 miles
from its junction with NM 75. It was just north of the Sipapu Ski Area lodge
at a pond in a lone juniper, then flew to deciduous trees along the stream.
In Sandoval County:
The BZ tour on June 2 had four BLACK SWIFTS over Jemez Falls off NM 4 in the
Jemez Mts. On the Dome Road (FR 368) there was a male THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER, a pair of EVENING GROSBEAKS, a pair of CASSIN’S FINCHES, and about 15
RED
CROOSBILLS. On June 4 there were four crossbills at Bandelier NM near Los
Alamos.
SO on June 8 had a BALD EAGLE soaring to the north over the Bernalillo
Watershed in the Cibola NF.
In Los Alamos County:
BZ found a EURASIAN COLLRED-DOVE in the White Rock part of Los Alamos on
June 2.
In Santa Fe County:
CR on June 4 at the abandoned town of White Lakes south of Santa Fe found
CASSIN’S SPARROWS. At the Santa Fe Ski Basin he saw a PINE GROSBEAK and a
GOSHAWK. The BZ tour on June 4 found a BLUE GROUSE on the road to the Ski Basin
at the Aspen Vista. They had a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER at the Ski Basin
with four of the grosbeaks.
MR and DE on June 3 along the Santa Fe Rio had a SCOTT’S ORIOLE and four
BLACK PHOEBES.
In San Miguel County:
CR and BN on June 10 had a singing KENTUCKEY WARBLER on NM 65 above Las
Vegas west of Gallinas at the NF boundary.
At the Clabber Hill Ranch adjacent to Conchas Lake one or two calling BLACK
RAILS have been found. One was calling for LC and LL on June 3. JP also
heard a LEAST BITTERN May 28 on the “Ammodramus” Pond. The ranch is private;
for permission to bird call Tony Gabel at 868-3351.
CR from Pecos to the top of Rowe Mesa on June 4 had six HEPATIC TANAGERS,
two CASSIN’S SPARROWS singing on the mesa with a LONG-EARED OWL in Rowe.
Earlier the telescope at the Crane Lake Overlook was stolen. The Las Vegas
Refuge is hoping to get a new one for $4000. Please send donations to the

In Colfax County:
On Stubblefield Lake on June 1 there was a GLOSSY IBIS, seen again on June 5
and 7 near the inflow channel. . He had 20 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS June 7.
. The lake level is dropping fast.
DC on June 8 had a DICKCISSEL singing between mile markers 1 and 2 on NM 505
near the Maxwell Refuge near the Knox home.
At Springer Lake DC had on June 2 41 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.
At Eagle Nest Lake on June 7 he had 16 CALIFORNIA GULLS, about 60 TREE
SWALLOWS, and 80 COMMON MERGANSERS (“mostly guys”).
Near Black Lake south of Angel Fire on June 5 and 7 there was a late SNOW
GOOSE on NM 434 at mile marker 25. On NM 120 (to Ocate off of 434) there were
several displaying WILSON’S SNIPES at mile post 1.
In McKinley County:
JP and WW on June 3 had 75 to 100 PINYON JAYS from Thoreau to Bluewater Lake.
They found Black Rock Lake at Zuni Pueblo nearly dry. At Vanderwagen south
of Gallup there were four PURPLE MARTINS along the highway on June 3.
In Cibola County:
JP and WW on June 3 had a singing male INDIGO BUNTING at Ramah Lake.
CJG on May 28 reported in the Zuni Mts. PURPLE MARTINS on Forest Road 50
below the Oso Ridge Tower. Some roads in the range have been closed; and areas
in the Malpais Natl. Park are alao restricted. The road up Bluewater Canyon
is closed.
In Bernalillo County:
JJ had a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER drumming on Sandia Crest east of
Albuquerque on the east side of the Kiwanis Meadow on June 3.
On June 4 on the Rio Grande Valley State Park on the west side of the rio
south of Rio Brave at mile post 6 ¾ he had a singing male INDIGO BUNTING.
KB from May 9 to 29 has been intermittently seeing one or two ACORN
WOODPECKERS at her home off NM 338 south of Tijeras in the Manzanita Mts. Contact

At the ponds at 4th and Tramway there were two MISSISSIPPI KITES for BV on
May 27 when he christened the area the Tramway Wetlands. LC reported them on
June 4.
JJ heard one WHIP-POOR-WILL at the Doc Long Picnic Area in the eastern
Sandia Mts. with a FLAMMULATED OWL heard between the two main parking areas.
In Valencia County:
MW on May 31 saw a flying MISSISSIPPI KITE over the northern esit ramp from
I-25 into Belen.
In Socorro County:
LG and CD on June 10 discovered a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON in the pond at
the end of the marsh loop, a COUCH’S KINGBIRD in the big elm southwest of the
cactus garden at headquarters, VERDINS at the Quail Pond, and a second-year
male HOODED ORIOLE at the cactus garden. SSA reported a CATBIRD on Bosque
del Apache refuge near San Antonio on June 3 at the start of the Marsh Loop.
BW on June 5 had a LEAST BITTERN just north of the east end of the boardwalk.
BZ on June 1 found two female HOODED MERGANSERS with a LEAST TERN from the
boardwalk.
SSA on June 3 also had an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on a pole just outside
of San Antonio.
BZ reported two COMMON GRACKES in Magdalena on May 31.
In Water Canyon west of Socorro SM reports that the campground will be moved
to a new site.
In Chaves County:
GW on Bitter Lake Refuge heard the LEAST BITTERN on Units 15 or 16.
In Catron Coounty:
JH on June 5 had a female MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD at her feeders on the
ranch east of Datil.
The BZ tour on May 31 had a female BRONZED COWBIRD at the Whitewater Canyon
Catwalk near Glenwood with a HUTTON’S VIREO. He had EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVEs
in Luna and Reserve.
In Sierra County:
BW on June 5 in Truth or Consequences on Riverside Drive had three BRONZED
COWBIRDS. At South Monticello Point of Elephant Butte Lake there was an ‘
impressive’ breeding colony of WESTERN and CLARK’S GREBES.
At Animas Canyon near Caballo Lake he found an immature male AMERICAN
REDSTART on the Ladder Ranch with three pairs of BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS.
The BZ tour on May 28 had a lowland ZONE-TAILED HAWK female at Percha Dam
State Park. Three VERMILION FLYCATCHERS were seen on May 27.
In Sierra/Grant Counties:
OLIVE WARBLERS have feen found on Emory Pass in the Black Range by CL on
June 4, PSu on June 1, and CCBr on June 3. CL hiked five miles on the ridge
towards Hillsboro Peak and found CLARK’S NUTCRACKER, GOSHAWK, and WILLIAMSON’S
SAPSUCKER.
In Grant County:
PSu on June 2 and CCBr on June 3 had calling FLAMMULATED OWLs and
WHIPPOORWILLS in the Pinos Altos Mts. north of Silver City at the McMillan
Campground.
PSu also heard a SPOTTED OWL. BZ had a MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD female at
the adjacent Cherry Creek Campground on May 27.
CCBR on June 3 on NM 35 south of Lake Roberts at mile marker 5 had a BLACK
HAWK perched over the Mimbres River. BZ had a COLLARED DOVE at the
Grayfeathers Lodge near the lake on May 31.
RS had a BLACK HAWK on NM 92 east of Duncan, AZ just inside the NM line on
May 31.
On the road in the Burro Mts. to Redrock on May 30 BZ had two HUTTON’S
VIREOS and a COLLARED DOVE at a home near Silver City on the way.
In Hidalgo County:
RV and MH reported two BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHERS in the NM part of Guadalupe
Canyon near the orchard on June 4. JP and JO found them only on the Arizona
side about 1.5 to two miles west near the fifth stream crossing with a GILA
MONSTER. (okay so I like reptiles). At the NM side orchard there was a
VARIED BUNTING male with a GRAY VIREO on the hillside. A GRAY HAWK was on the
Arizona side of the state line and four COMMON GROUND-DOVES were near the
entrance gate. The gnatcatchers were not found by MB and NP on June 7, but they
did find two MONTEZUMA QUAIL near the orchard on the NM side.
MT on June 5 had an adult WHITE-TAILED KITE along US 80 about five miles
south of Rodeo.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for
about a year for construction.
In Doña Ana County:
JD at the Mesilla Valley Park on June 8 had a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK
and a CATBIRD.
JZ and MS at their home in Radium Springs have had a GREEN HERON at their
pond through June 4. Also seen there have been on June 2 late PINE SISKINS and
a fly-by LITTLE BLUE HERON with a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on June 4.
DG at his Las Cruces home again briefly saw the COMMON GROUND-DOVE on June 1.
CCBr on the Pine Tree Trail in Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts.
on May 28-29 saw two ACORN WOODPECKERS and HUTTON’S VIREOS. A ZONE-TAILED
HAWK flew above Texas Canyon and off over Sugarloaf Peak. The BZ tour on May 27
found three GRAY VIREOS at the park.
In Otero County:
DG on Otero Mesa at a well on May 30-31 saw CASSIN’S SPARROWs
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been
installed for birders to list their sightings.
BZ at the ponds on May 27 reported one FRANKLIN’S GULL and a second year
CALIFORNIA GULL. CL on June 8 had three BLACK TERNS and a LONG-BILLED CURLEW
there with a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO. A late BAIRD’S SANDPIPER and Plegadis ibis
were at Lagoon G.
In Eddy County:
SW at Brantley Lake on June 3 photographed an adult LAUGHING GULL with a
MISSISSIPPI KITE in Artesia. Near Lakewood there was a SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER and a BELL’S VIREO.
With TH on June 2 there was a GRAY VIREO at Lowe Spring in Walnut Canyon of
the Carlsbad Caverns.
RN on June 4 at Bataan Lake in Carlsbad had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.
At Rattlesnake Springs on May 29 SW saw the GRAY HAWK near the abandoned
stock tank, a few INDIGO BUNTINGS and an eastern female BRONZED COWBIRD.
In Slaughter Canyon SWh had three GRAY VIREOS on May 15.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call

and on June 22 to Isleta Marsh and the Los Lunas River Park with Bev Silfer.
