Feature Birds
---------------------------
NORTHERN PARULA
EASTERN KINGBIRD
ARCTIC TERN
LESSER NIGHTHAWK

Tuesday, June 13
RARE BIRD ALERT: A singing male NORTHERN PARULA was heard over the noon hour
on the northwest side of Royal Roads University in Colwood. To get to the
site, turn east onto Wishart Road (at the firehall) off Metchosin Road in
Colwood. Travel down Wishart about 2/3rds of way to the school at end of
road and look for a white and red fire hydrant near an entrance gate to
Royal Roads approximately opposite 3112 Wishart. After going through the
gate by the fire hydrant, go "straight" or south down a trail/service road
that goes downhill for about 150-200 metres where a second fire hydrant and
some recently chain sawed logs are just off the trail. The bird was singing
and foraging in this general area in the maples and firs (note at least 2
Barred Owls were nearby, so listen too for all the fuss being raised by
robins). Note that parking is pretty limited along Wishart, so you may need
to find parking on one of the side streets and walk back to this gate. If
confirmed/accepted, this represents only the second record for the Victoria
checklist area and the seventh for the province.

Monday, June 12
There were 3 EASTERN KINGBIRDS at the north end of the wooden bridge at
Blenkinsop Lake in Saanich.
A RED-EYED VIREO was in Haro Woods near the Lam Family Student Complex on
the east side of the University of Victoria.

Sunday, June 11
There was a second-hand report for an EASTERN KINGBIRD at Beacon Hill Park
along the cliffside trail just east of the Mile 0 marker.
There were individual GREEN HERONS observed at both Swan Lake and Blenkinsop
Lake.

Saturday, June 10
Out of town, an EASTERN KINGBIRD was photographed at the Carmanah Point
Lightstation on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Friday, June 9
There was a late report received for two ARCTIC TERNS at Sidney Spit Marine
Park on Sidney Island.
An adult BROWN PELICAN was just offshore from Jordan River.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was at the sound end of the grounds at Royal Roads
University in Colwood. The bird was frequenting a field which is most easily
accessed from trails off Heatherbell Road.

Thursday, June 8
4 SANDHILL CRANES were at the Glen Meadows Golf Course off McTavish Road
near West Saanich Road in North Saanich. This has definitely been a good
spring locally for this species and they continue to be reported widely.

Wednesday, June 7
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT of TOWN): A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was at the parking
lot of the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre at Long Beach near Tofino.
Nearby 35 BROWN PELICANS were tallied offshore.
7 PURPLE MARTINS were at the martin colony at Ayum Creek and the Goodridge
Peninsula off Goodridge Road in Sooke.
3 WHIMBREL remained on Race Rocks off the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

Tuesday, June 6
2 SANDHILL CRANES were flying north over Atkins Ave in Langford.
A RED-EYED VIREO was reported from a yard in Sooke.

Monday, June 5
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT of TOWN): In a late report, a LESSER NIGHTHAWK was
photographed about 50 miles off Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver
Island. The identification have since been confirmed by a number of
experienced North American birders as a second-year male Lesser Nighthawk.
This represents the first record for British Columbia and only the second
for Canada. Photos are available on Mike Yip's website:
www.vancouverislandbirds.com in Journal #167.
A TRUMPETER SWAN lingers at the Cowichan River estuary off the Blackly Dyke
trail off Tzouhalem Road in North Cowichan.
