HIGHLIGHTS

Marbled Godwit, Upland Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper

With the cold front scheduled to pass this weekend, warblers and other neotropical
migrants should be looked for. Montauk Point might be good if the wind is out of the
northwest overnight. Shorebirds continue to pore through the area, and the first 7
days of September often provide the highest diversity for this group.

The Riverhead Sod Fields continued to produce good birds this week. Three
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were along Rt 105 just north of the intersection with
Northville Turnpike on Aug 27 (EL). On Aug 28 the birds moved to the south side of
Northville Turnpike just west of Rt 105 and their number increased to 7 (TWB et
al.). There was also an UPLAND SANDPIPER in the same field (AB et al.) Three
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were found on Aug 28 (R&BSt). The Golden Plovers were still
present on Aug 29-30, and the number had grown to 4 on the latter date (AJL).

Three TURKEY VULTURES were seen along Sunrise Highway at Rt 111 in Eastport on Aug
28 (SB).

The MARBLED GODWIT was seen again, but this time at Cupsogue on Aug 28 (AB). Five
CORY'S SHEARWATER were spotted off Pike's Beach on Aug 28, while 30 or more ROYAL
TERNS were on the bay side flat (TWB et al). Fourteen ROYAL TERNS were at Pike's on
Aug 30 (RJ, SBd).

At Shinnecock, 4 CORY'S SHEARWATERS and an unidentified JAEGER were seen off the
inlet on Aug 28 (TWB et al.). A WHIMBREL was seen in the marshes along Dune Road
that same day (AJL). A PARASITIC JAEGER and 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER were spotted off the
inlet on Aug 30 (AB).

The small flat at Mecox has some birds. At least 15 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 2
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 BLACK TERNS, several ROSEATE TERNS, as many as 100 FORSTER'S
TERNS and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were there on Aug 30 (AJL).

At Short's Pond along Scuttlehole Road in Watermill there were 3 STILT SANDPIPERS, 1
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 WESTERN & 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on Aug 30 (AB). At the
horse farm along the east side of Hayground Road just south of Scuttlehole Rd there
were 9 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS in the back on Aug 30 (AB).

Off Amagansett there was a PARASITIC JAEGER and a SOOTY SHEARWATER on Aug 20 (AW).
Five SOOTY SHEARWATERS were seen off Atlantic Beach, Amagansett on Aug 25 (VB).

At Oyster Pond in Montauk there is still a good edge. An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 2
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER were found on Aug 26 (VB). On Aug 27
there were 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and the year's first BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (AB). A
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was seen at the pond on Aug 27 (K&BRu). A MERLIN was spotted on
Aug 29 (VB et al.). No wonder the shorebirds were jumpy all weekend.

Between Aug 20 and 22, there were up to 20 CORY'S SHEARWATERS on Washington Shoal,
which is located between Montauk Harbor and Shagwong Point (CS). Even though these
birds were seen from a fishing boat, they would have been visible from land.

On Shelter Island there was a MERLIN on Aug 25 and a WHIMBREL at Wade's Beach on Aug
18 (TB)

In Calverton and Baiting Hollow Jim Clinton has been conducting his COMMON NIGHTHAWK
vigil since Aug 18. So far the best day was 8 seen on Aug 28 at dusk near Wildwood
State Park. In addition he found 1 on Aug 18, 2 on Aug 22 and 1 on Aug 26. Jim says
this is the worst start of Nighthawk season in the five years he has been doing
this.

Out of our area a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was at the Setauket Mill Pond in Setauket on
Aug 26 (CK). This sure is a great spot for birds.

This week I received reports from Andy Baldelli, Steve Biasetti, Shane Blodgett, Tim
Bohen, Thomas W Burke, Vicki Bustamante, Paul Gillen, Nick Hamblet, Rob Jett, Craig
Kessler, Anthony J Lauro, Ernie Lewis, Kathleen O'Connor, Karen & Barbara Rubinstein
(K&BRu), Carl Safina, Rex & Birgit Stanford (R&BSt), and Al Wollin.

Good Birding to All!
