Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Sandy Remley found one MOUNTAIN QUAIL in Space 82 of the Santa Ana Loop at
Heart Bar Campground on June 12.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Roger Higson reported again on the NORTHERN CARDINAL in the Blythe area.
The bird was seen again early in the morning on June 8. Roger feels it is
the southwest race with a bushy crest and a low level of black above the
eye.

Jim Pike reported seeing a subadult GLOSSY IBIS, an adult LITTLE BLUE
HERON, and a possible GLOSSY x WHITE-FACED hybrid in the Prado Basin.
He noted that the Glossy had the characteristic charcoal gray facial skin
bordered by narrow powder blue lines and a dark eye, and that the Glossy
wasn’t associating with the many white-faced ibis in the area. He also
reported on the continuing nesting colony of TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS in the
Prado Basin.

Chet McGaugh reported from the north end of the Salton Sea on June 10. He
saw a first summer GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL at Johnson St. along with several
BLACK SKIMMERS and GULL-BILLED TERNS, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, a LESSER SCAUP,
and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.

Mike San Miguel birded the north end of the Salton Sea from Lincoln Ave to
the Whitewater delta ON June 10. He saw four BRANT,a male SURF SCOTER, two
SNOW GEESE, two adult YELLOW-FOOTED GULLS, and OSPREY, and a PEREGRINE
FALCON.

June 9, Gjon Hazard found two singing male INDIGO BUNTINGS in the
tamarisks west of the dike road between the Cibola Bridge, near Palo
Verde, and the vegetation restoration area to the south. He also saw a
couple of BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS in the same area, a BELL’S VIREO and a
YELLOW WARBLER in an oxbow area along the river north of County Line Road.
He noted that LUCY’S WARBLERS were at most spots along the river with good
habitat, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES were the most abundant migrant in the area,
followed by PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, and two WILLOW FLYCATCHERS. There
were many EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES.

Robert McMoran reported seeing a WHITE-WINGED DOVE on Buena Vista between
East Kimball Ave. and Florida in Hemet on June 11.



IMPERIAL COUNTY

June 9 and 10, Chet McGaugh visited the Salton Sea, where he saw a YELLOW-
BREASTED CHAT, at Siphon 9 of the Coachella Canal, downstream from Slab
City.

Guy McCaskie reported from the Imperial Valley on June 8. Birds seen
included the following:
BRANT—two, one in the SW corner of the Wister Unit, one at Unit 1
of the SSNWR
FRANKLIN’S GULL—one first summer plumage bird at Red Hill
LITTLE GULL—one first summer plumage bird at Unit 1
WESTERN GULL—one adult at the north end of Garst Rd.
LEAST TERN—two adults in the SW corner of the Wister Unit
SPOTTED DOVE—one adult at the intersection of 4th and International in
Niland.
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER—five at the west end of Hazard Rd.
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER—ten at Unit 1
GREATER YELLOWLEGS—five around Red Hill
WILLET—five around Red Hill
WHIMBREL—one near Red Hill
LONG-BILLED CURLEW—about one hundred fifty around Red Hill
MARBLED GODWIT—five around Red Hill and thirty at Unit 1
WESTERN SANDPIPER—three at the SSNWR and five at Unit 1
LEAST SANDPIPER—seven at Unit 1
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER—nine at Unit 1
WILSON’S PHALAROPE—twenty adult females at Unit 1
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE—one at Unit 1

Mary Beth Stowe found CASPIAN TERNS at Pelican Island. She also had an
interesting encounter with a COMMON LOON that was found on the road out
from Pelican Island on June 12. At Johnson’s Landing she say GULL-BILLED
TERNS and SNOWY PLOVERS. Along the path to the photo blind on the trail
from the tower at SSNWR, she saw COMMON MOORHEN. A HEERMAN’S GULL was
spotted along the shore west from Lack and Lindsay, and a PIED-BILLED
GREBE and LEAST BITTERN were seen near McKittrick. She spotted a COMMON
GROUND DOVE at the headquarters.
