Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 15,
2006. This report covers the period from June 9th to June 15th and will be
updated again on June 22nd.

Another slow week in the Ocean State, however a couple of very good birds
made their way into our region this past week.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, most often seen as a fall migrant, was found along
Moonstone Beach Road in South Kingston on the 12th. The bird was found just
south of the entrance to South Shore Management Area, where the road makes a
sharp bend. The bird was near the fields there, on the wires and in the
trees. It was heard singing along that stretch of road again on the 14th.

A COMMON MOORHEN was seen at the Great Swamp Management Area. It was found
on the 11th, and reported again on the 13th and 14th. The bird was observed
in the impoundment area, in the northwest corner, just as the trail opens up
to the water.

On the 13th, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was recorded at the Carter Nature
Preserve in Charlestown. The bird sings from low exposed perches, and a scope is
needed for best views. Walking out into the field here is forbidden.

At Ninigret NWR on the 9th, 2 WILD TURKEY, 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 1 AMERICAN
REDSTART, 2 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 3 PURPLE FINCH, 2 WOOD THRUSH, 3 WILLOW
FLYCATCHER,
and 1 ALDER FLYCATCHER. The Alder was seen and heard near the marshy area
after the small ponds on the west side of the refuge.

Also on the 9th, in the marsh at the Charlestown Breachway, 1 MARSH WREN, 2
SEASIDE SPARROW, 3 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, and 1 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED
SPARROW. On the 14th, a LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen on the flats.

A TRICOLORED HERON was reported from Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the
14th. It was seen from the pullout, behind the sign for the marsh.

On the 15th, 1 COMMON NIGHTHAWK over the East Side of Providence.

Finally, a colony of 18 PURPLE MARTINS are being monitored at the Rhode
Island County Club in Barrington.

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island offers many walks and special field
trips, some non-bird related, open to both members and non-members. Call
headquarters at 401-949-5454 for a copy of the Audubon Report.

That's all for this week, thank you for calling and good birding!
