This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 2, 2005 covering
the period August 26-September 2, 2005.



A RED-NECKED GREBE was sighted off the west shore of Grand Isle
on August 18th as well as on September 1st



Forty GREAT BLUE HERONS were seen at Dead Creek on August 27th. Four
GREAT EGRETS were spotted at the Brilyea Access at Dead Creek on the 26th
of August.



A BALD EAGLE was observed occupying an OSPREY's nest at Dead
Creek on August 27th and one was seen at Herrick's Cove as well as at the
Farrell Access at Dead Creek on September 1st. A MERLIN was seen at
Herrick's Cove on the 27th, on Grand Isle on the 30th and off Lake Road in
Charlotte as well as in Addison on September 1st. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS
were eyeing the fallout of shorebirds at the Farrell Access at Dead Creek
on August 27th, and one was present on September 1st as well.



Thirteen COMMON MOORHENS were spotted along Panton Road in
Swanton on August 31st.



SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,KILLDEER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, and a BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER were seen at Dead Creek on August 27th. Hurricane Katrina
produced an impressive fallout of shorebirds at Dead Creek with the
following birds sighted at the Farrell Access on August 31st : 15
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 140 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 12 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 30 KILLDEER, 8 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 35 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, (1
SOLITARY SANDPIPER on August 30th), 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 2 HUDSONIAN
GODWITS, 3 SANDERLINGS, 300+ SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 120 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 80 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 10 WILSON'S SNIPE. A RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE was seen at a farm pond near Dead Creek on August 27th and one
was observed at a pond along Goodrich Corners Road in Addison on August
31st. Smaller numbers of shorebirds were also observed August 31st at the
Charlotte Town Beach (2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, and 1
LEAST SANDPIPER), County Road in Swanton (93 KILLDEER and 2 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS) and in Panton, where Panton Road crosses Dead Creek (13 COMMON
MOORHENS AND 11 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS).



Although numbers were fewer, shorebird sightings were still plentiful on
September 1st in the Champlain Valley: 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 6
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a few KILLDEER, GREATER AND LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a few
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 3 SANDERLINGS, 120 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 12 LEAST
SANDPIPERS and 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS at the Farrell Access at Dead Creek;
20 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 7 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a few GREATER and
LESSER YELLOWLEGS and many KILLDEER were observed on a plowed field off of
Lake Road in Charlotte; 20 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 20 KILLDEER, 12
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and 1 adult and 2 juvenile
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at Goodrich Corners Road in Addison and 2 UPLAND
SANDPIPERS off Slang Road in Panton. Not to ignore the shorebirds of
eastern Vermont on this day, there was 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS spotted at
Pompy Flats.



A juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER was seen at the Charlotte Town Beach on
September 1st. Two CASPIAN TERNS were seen at the Stone Dam at Dead Creek
on August 30th.



COMMON NIGHTHAWK migration has started in earnest. Two hundred
and fifty birds were seen flying over Brattleboro and 4 over Sharon on
August 26th, 150 near Pompy Flats on the 29th, and on August 30th 30 more
were sighted at Pompy Flats as well as a small flock in Norwich, 2 in
Union Village and 2 in Westford.



A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen in Dummerston on August
30th.



A CAROLINA WREN was singing in Proctor on August 27th and 28th
and one was observed on Grand Island on the 29th.



A BROWN THRASHER was observed at the West Rutland Marsh on
August 30th.



A WILSON'S WARBLER was spotted at the West Rutland Marsh on the
30th of August.
