This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, June 19.
A two-day breeding bird survey at the High Ridge Wildlife Management Area in
Westminster and Gardner produced 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 1 NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 2 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 50 RED-EYED VIREOS,
21 WOOD THRUSHES, 8 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, 4
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 39 OVENBIRDS, 12 SCARLET
TANAGERS, 8 INDIGO BUNTINGS, 57 BOBOLINKS, 29 BALTIMORE
ORIOLES, and 4 PURPLE FINCHES, and another breeding bird survey at the
Broad Meadow Brook sanctuary in Worcester produced 1 WILD TURKEY,
2 VIRGINIA RAILS, 4 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, 17 EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEES, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 1 YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO, 17 WOOD THRUSHES, 5 PRAIRIE WARBLERS, 6 SCARLET
TANAGERS, 15 EASTERN TOWHEES, 6 FIELD SPARROWS, 4
SWAMP SPARROWS, and 17 BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
Four Royal Terns were noted at Nantucket yesterday, a SANDWICH TERN was
seen at Race Point in Provincetown yesterday, and also at Race Point were 1
BALD EAGLE, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 400 LAUGHING GULLS, 1 LITTLE GULL,
5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 1 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE,
25 ROSEATE TERNS, roughly 450 COMMON TERNS, 3 ARCTIC TERNS,
and 1 BLACK TERN.
Recent reports from South Beach and nearby North Monomoy Island in Chatham
included 4 GADWALL, 350 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 5 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 15 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 80 WILLETS, 14 RUDDY
TURNSTONES, 105 RED KNOTS, 40 SANDERLINGS, 110 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER, 16 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS,
4 DUNLIN, and 25 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and weekend reports
from Plum Island included 4 WOOD DUCKS, 9 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 5
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 1 COMMON MOORHEN,
a KING RAIL, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 20 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
and 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Recent miscellaneous reports have included a BLACK VULTURE in Marion
and a LITTLE BLUE HERON at Nantucket.
