You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Sunday June 25. The roster this week includes sightings
of SANDWICH TERN, BLACK TERN, ROSEATE TERN, PARASITIC JAEGER, LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, GREATER SHEARWATER, SOOTY SHEARWATER, MANX
SHEARWATER, WILSON’S STORM PETREL, BROWN PELICAN and SANDHILL CRANE.

The SANDHILL CRANE that has been frequenting the Beaver Swamp WMA was
reported to have been seen yesterday 6/24 in the evening.

There have been a number of pelagic species seen from Cape May in the
last week. A flock of about 25 WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS were seen on
6/20 from St. Mary’s jetty. Again, on 6/21, 5-8 were seen from the
same location.

A MANX SHEARWATER was seen from Cape May Point on 6/19, in the evening.

Also on 6/19 were one CORY’S SHEARWATER, and 5 GREATER SHEARWATERS.
On 6/20 one GREATER SHEARWATER was seen from St. Mary’s jetty.

A SOOTY SHEARWATER was seen from Cape May Point on 6/21, in the morning.

PARASITIC JAEGERS have also been seen from Cape May Point this week.
Two were seen on 6/19 and again, two were seen on 6/21 from St. Mary’s.

“Lots” of ROSEATE TERNS were spotted from Cape May Point on 6/19 and
again, one was seen from St. Mary’s on 6/20.

SANDWICH TERNS have been seen with some frequency this week. One or
two were seen from Cape May Point on 6/19. One second year was
reported from St. Mary’s on the morning of 6/20 and one was seen at
Cook’s Beach, flying south, on 6/24.

Also on 6/24 a breeding plumage BLACK TERN was seen around Bunker
Pond at the Cape May Point State Park.

At least one LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL has been hanging around Cape
May this week. There was a report of one seen on 6/20 from St.
Mary’s and one seen at the Cape May Point State Park today, 6/25.

Lastly, two BROWN PELICANS were seen from Cape May Point on the
morning of 6/21.

Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week,
9-4:30.
