Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 29,
2006. This report covers a two week period, from June 16th to June 29th and
will be updated again on July 13th.
Late June is a very slow time for any rare or unusual species to appear, so
there were very few reports these past two weeks.
The most notable sighting was a ROYAL TERN, found on the 29th at Third Beach
Restoration Area in Middletown. It was seen in the early morning as it flew
up and circled the flats and was last seen flying into the fog. Other birds
seen here include: 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 PIPING
PLOVER, 13 KILLDEER, 29 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 2 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 5 RUDDY TURNSTONE and 2 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON.
On the 16th, along Route 95 South, 1 COMMON RAVEN was observed sitting on a
highway light fixture just south of the Adult Correctional Institution.
At the Charlestown Breachway on the 27th, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER was found.
In upper Narraganset Bay near Providence, 1 LAUGHING GULL was seen on the
26th.
On the 21st at Napatree Point in Westerly: 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 4 PIPING
PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 5 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 29
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 4 EASTERN PHOEBE.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen near Potter Cove off Prudence Island.
Resident birds found at Arcadia Management Area include: 1 BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 1 BROWN CREEPER, 6
HERMIT THRUSH, 2 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 2 PRAIRIE WARBLER, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
2 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 1 AMERICAN REDSTART, 5 BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER, 1 BROWN THRASHER, 1 PURPLE FINCH, 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and 2 INDIGO
BUNTING.
At Fort Barton in Tiverton on the 27th, 2 WORM-EATING WARBLER, and 1 adult
BALD EAGLE was seen soaring over Route 24.
On the 21st, over the East Side of Providence, 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWK were
reported.
