RARE BIRD ALERT for ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER and
ALDER FLYCATCHER. Both of these birds were last reported on
June 24. If you have further sightings, please leave a message on the RBA.
Out-of-town RARE BIRD ALERTS for a MAGNIFICENT
FRIGATEBIRD in Sooke, BC on June 27, and a long-staying
HOODED ORIOLE in Seattle, WA. For updates on the
frigatebird or other birds on southern Vancouver Island,
phone the Victoria RBA at 250-592-3381.
Sightings for Thursday, June 29, 2006
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, an out-of-season adult
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was seen. Also noted
there were 12 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 4 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, and a TUNDRA SWAN. Two AMERICAN
BITTERNS were heard "pumping" in the outer marsh there.
Except for the sparrow, all these birds had been present since
at least June 24.
In North Delta, 2 BLACK SWIFTS were seen overhead near the
intersection of Monroe Drive and 112th Street.
Sightings for Wednesday, June 28
In Surrey, a MERLIN was seen on 27A Avenue near 172nd Street.
Sightings for Tuesday, June 27
Another MERLIN was seen in the Walnut Grove area of Langley,
along 208th Street near the Yorkson Creek crossing.
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
were seen. This is a rare breeding species around Vancouver,
although it has bred previously at Reifel.
Sightings for Monday, June 26
Another YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen, in Vancouver's
Stanley Park, near the rose gardens south of Beaver Lake.
Sightings for Sunday, June 25
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, a GREAT HORNED OWL,
an OSPREY, and a TURKEY VULTURE were seen, as well
as the summering TUNDRA SWAN.
Sightings for Saturday, June 24
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen by several observers
on Iona Island, Richmond, along the west side of the outer pond.
A summering BUFFLEHEAD was also seen in the pond.
This is the last date on record for the singing ALDER FLYCATCHER
just southeast of Surrey Lake Park, off 152nd Street in Surrey.
Several CASPIAN TERNS were heard calling about 11 PM over
Robson Street in downtown Vancouver. Where they were
going is anybody's guess.
Sightings for Friday, June 23
At the lagoon near the tip of the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta,
there were at least 6 adult BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS and
2 chicks.
Sightings for Thursday, June 22
At Iona Island in Richmond, a WESTERN KINGBIRD and an OSPREY
were seen, as well as several PURPLE MARTINS at the nest boxes
on the North Arm of the Fraser River.
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, 4 unseasonable DUNLIN and 2
GREATER YELLOWLEGS were reported.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen at the Maplewood Conservation Area
in North Vancouver.
Sightings for Wednesday, June 21
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, an OSPREY and a surprising 51
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen.
At Crescent Park in Surrey, birds seen included a BARRED OWL and
a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.
In North Langley, in the 20400 block of 97A Avenue, 3 COMMON
NIGHTHAWKS were seen.
Sightings for Tuesday, June 20
At Surrey Lake Park on 152nd Street in Surrey, the EASTERN PHOEBE
at the bridge next to the parking lot and the ALDER FLYCATCHER
just southeast of the park were both reported. Also here were a
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE and at least 40 BLACK SWIFTS.
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, a TUNDRA SWAN and a PEREGRINE
FALCON were both quite unusual for the time of year.
