This is the Friday, September 2, 2005 Missouri Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state. The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual,
or accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds.
Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section
are listed as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be
considered rare only during a particular season or in a particular
part of the state.)
In the Columbia area, one juvenile MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen by
Kathleen Anderson at the Bear Creek Trail parking lot off of Garth
Ave. (Boone Co.) on Friday, September 2. This is the same area where
Harold and Kathleen Anderson have observed up to two adult
MISSISSIPPI KITES since July.
In the southeastern corner of the state, the population of WHITE-
WINGED DOVES in the town of East Prairie (Mississippi Co.) has grown
over the summer from one confirmed bird on June 28 to at least five
on August 31, reported Joe Eades. Since they were first located by
Eades earlier this summer, the WHITE-WINGED DOVES have been seen
consistently in the immediate area of Mo Hwy 80 and S. Dutch Drive.
There is a brick, two-story house on the south side of Mo Hwy 80 and
on the east side of S. Dutch Dr.; next door (the second house on Mo
Hwy 80 east of S. Dutch) there is a home with a number of bird
feeders, where the five doves were seen feeding together on August
31. This intersection is on the west side of the town of East
Prairie, near the green city-limits sign. There is a church parking
lot across the street that provides a good view of the yard with the
feeders.
In north-central Missouri, Steve Kinder reported on dark PEREGRINE
FALCON at the north unit of the Thompson River Wetlands (Livingston
Co.) on Tuesday, August 30.
